To Know Before You Go…

For a fuller Captain Marvel discussion, check out our YouTube Review here!

Movie: Captain Marvel
Rating: PG-13
Age Suggestion: 10+
Running Time: 2 hours 5 minutes
Release Date: March 8, 2019
Stars:  5 out of 5 stars (from our whole team!)
Themes: Friendship, Loyalty, Wars/Fighting, Mentorship, Origin Stories

Trigger Warnings: The violence is on par with other Marvel movies. Be aware that there are some flashbacks to possible child abuse but it is just inferred lightly. There are a few jump scares and some mild language as well. Lighter overall than the Avenger movies.

Quick Summary: What started the Avengers? And who did Fury call on at the end of the last Avengers movie? Carol Danvers finds herself in the middle of a war with no memories, can she figure out who she is in time to save earth from being collateral damage? An awesome origin story that stands on it’s own two feet. Engaging, thrilling and hilarious at the same time! Go see this movie with your friends, family or your kids and their friends! Worth seeing even if you are not a fan of all the Marvel movies. Definitely stay for the credit scenes.

Thoughts from the Elf, Hobbit, and Queen:
-Higher, further, faster indeed! Great movie!

-The tribute at the beginning to Stan Lee was very well done.

-This was the Avengers origin story but it was also a unique superhero movie that stands on its own. Incredibly fun, inspiring and entertaining.

-I am so glad that I did not listen to the critics and wait to see this movie! Some said it was boring- you must have been watching from another planet. Super engaging action movie. Some said the acting wasn’t great- again, we must have been watching a different movie… everyone from the stars, the kids and even the extras did a great job- I was emerged in the universe and invested in the characters from the get go. (And I wasn’t thinking of all the other things I had seen them in- which is impressive to me) Some said it was just another feminist political push movie, what?!?!?!?! If that’s true- let’s see more because this was AWESOME and Captain Marvel is an amazing female super hero! Some said the characters didn’t have depth- you would have had to change the plot to give them anymore depth.

-And I am so glad that they did not change the plot because it was well written- especially considering all the content they had to fit in and all the pieces they had to connect!

-There has been a lot of Captain Marvel discussion out there. Whether it was necessary, whether it was good, whether it was a good idea to have a female centric superhero movie. Let me just, the answer to all of these questions is yes!

-I’m also jazzed that they waited to make this origin story. I think it has all of the best pieces of the marvel universe and am impressed with how it ties them all together. It’s got the well placed humor of Guardians with the intensity of Captain America.

-Captain Marvel is an amazing role model!

-This was the first super hero movie we have seen that did not have a hint of romance in it, and we did not miss it and weren’t looking for it which is impressive.

-PS- We always knew that cats had evil monsters lurking beneath their surfaces just waiting to take over the world 😉

Thoughts from the Ranger and Princess:

-This is one of the best origin stories that Marvel has created!

-This movie has a wonderful plot full of twists and surprises that keep you guessing. It gets you to care for new characters, and reintroduces you to some classic great characters that you learn to love even more!

-I think they did a wonderful job tying in 80s music and comedy elements (sort of tying in a guardians of the galaxy theme) without making it a focus or distracting.

-It has a great female empowerment element, but also a human empowerment element. It speaks to the fact that emotions are not a weakness, but a strength, that choosing the right and good thing is always the way to go, and that we are stronger than we believe.

-This movie teaches us that dreams matter and that anything is possible when you work hard and never give up. Over all this was a phenomenal Marvel Movie (definitely one of our favorites) with a great message and amazing CGI. A must see!

By far our favorite take away from this movie was that there is power in being human. In getting back up and trying again and again after you get knocked down. What was your favorite take away or part?
