Space Boy Parent Review:
-This is a book compilation of a popular comic strip. It has an intriguing premise. The main character is Amy. She is, when the story begins, in high school on a mining colony in deep space. However – her father loses is job and they are sent back to earth. To get back to earth they are frozen for 30 years. When Amy wakes up, she is not only in a totally new environment, but any friends she had are now much older, and technology, culture, etc., have all changed (think about 30 years ago – no smartphones, no internet….it makes a difference).
-We have a lot to digest in the first book – but there are many challenges still ahead. So – I love the premise. It gives you all sorts of tension areas to work with. The art is interesting – a mix between simple and complex. I am looking forward to reading book two…
Space Boy Parent Review Discussion questions:
(1) Amy has a special ability. She sees “flavors” in people (which is real – it is called synesthesia – crossed sensory inputs). If you had to yourself a flavor, what would it be (I think mine would be peanut butter and chocolate, but it also could be vanilla ice cream…..). What flavors would you give to your friends and family? Why?
(2) We don’t have friends move through time (like Amy and Jemmah). But we can have friends move far away. Have you ever had a friend move far away? How difficult is it to keep a friendship going when you can’t physically be around the other person? Does technology – social media, FaceTime, Skype – help, or does that make it harder?
(3) Have you ever had problems adjusting to a new type of technology that your friends had already mastered?
(4) Have you ever felt like you were surrounded by “Nothing”?
(5) There were many things that were familiar on earth, and ones that were not. Did any of the new things (like, for example, Britalian food) throw you off? Were there things that were the same that surprised you (like a ferris wheel, for instance)?
