Quick Summary of Cat Kid
Lil’ Petey (Cat Kid) teaches the tadpoles about how to write a book. More than that though, he teaches them that before you succeed at anything, you have to learn how to fail well. There is constant humor and fun.
And while there’s not as much of a typical storyline in this book. It is a truly great read for more time at home this winter to encourage some creativity and a spirit of learning/flexibility!!
Cat Kid Review
Several prior Dog Man characters come together to help kids learn to be creative. Lil’ Petey (Cat Kid) and one of the tadpoles (Molly) set up a class to teach the other tadpoles to draw and create comics. The tadpoles dad, Flippy, is there to help supervise. You get the squabbles you would expect with 20 siblings. Including lots of humor appropriate to young kids as the tadpoles work in groups, or by themselves, to create a comic. We get to see several of these creations.
Why Read Cat Kid
The book should appeal to a wide audience, whether or not the kids would consider themselves creative. It’s also a reminder that we all can be creative and that we enjoy writing and reading in different ways. Some may write stories, others poetry. Some may be good at drawing or coloring. Others may be good at creating out of clay or other objects, or good at photography. But everyone can create, and the book reminds us this in a fun way that kids will relate to.
The artwork is the great artwork you see in the Dog Man books, but is now supplemented by photography, lay figures, etc. The book also emphasizes that parents need to provide love and support for their kid’s efforts. This would be a really fun book to read together over a school break and create some some projects together.
