Moms We Love!

No mother is perfect but a great, loving mom is just the best. Moms keep the wheels rolling, bring life into the world, inspire and mold us. The moms in literature, movies and on tv are some of our favorite inspirational characters. These are the mommas we love. Who’s your favorite mom character?

10 Moms We Love in Literature

1) Harry Potter (JK Rowling) – Molly Weasley

Mom Qualities: She keeps the Weasley’s running. Molly is loving, accepting, tough, and a mom to all. Plus you know she’ll take down a bad guy for you.

2) Matilda (Roald Dahl) – Miss Honey

Mom Qualities: Matilda and Jennifer Honey come from abusive situations and adopt each other. Miss honey is a caring teacher, loving mom, relatable, encouraging, brave, and safe.

3) Anne of Green Gables (LM Montgomery) – Marilla Cuthbert

Mom Qualities: A reluctant mom at first. Marilla quickly becomes a fiercely loyal, tough and brave mother.

4) Little Women (Louisa May Alcott) – Marmee

Mom Qualities: Inspiring, bold and a fierce mama bear. She encourages her girls to reach for their dreams. Marmee is even more lovable in the new movie where she’s less of a lecturer and more understanding (you can find our full discussion guide for that here.)

5) A Wrinkle in Time (Madeleine L’engle)- Dr Kate Murry

Mom Qualities: Mother to four, she’s also an award winning scientist, and her husband is stuck in a science experiment. She’s smart, determined, and inspires her kids.

6) The Princess Diaries (Meg Cabot)- Helen

Mom Qualities: This single mom’s raising a secret princess. She’s emotionally strong, creative, and super encouraging.

7) Wonder (Raquel J. Palacio) – Isabel Pullman

Mom Qualities: One of the toughest parts of being is a mom is trying to protect your kids. For special needs mom this is especially hard. Isabel does everything she can for her kids. 9) Stuart Little (E.B. White) – Mrs. Little

Mom Qualities: She accepts Stuart just as he is and encourages him. She’s loving and determined to give her kids a positive home.

10) the Romona Quimby Series- Dorothy Quimby

Mom Qualities: Dorothy is a relatable mom. She argues with her kids and husband, sure. But she also loves her family fiercely. In one of her most iconic mom moments, she helps Romana pack a too-heavy suitecase to run away from home to get her to stay.

10 Moms We Love in Faith

1) Matthew, Luke: Mary

Mom Qualities: The mother of Jesus. Brave, steady and faithful. Mary might just be the bravest mom in history.

2) 2 Timothy: Eunice & Lois

Mom Qualities: Timothy’s mom and grandmother. They had a strong, steady faith that they passed on- and not just to Timothy. They impacted generations.

3) Genesis- Jochebed

Mom Qualities: Moses’ mom was determined to keep her baby safe. She was tough and rebellious. While her plan did not work out exactly as she intended, she managed to keep her child alive.

4) Ruth- Naomi

Mom Qualities: Naomi had an incredibly difficult life. Even in the midst of her grief, she was determined, strong and faithful.

5) Judges- Deborah

Mom Qualities: We don’t technically know whether or not Deborah was a mother, but we know she was a judge of Israel and influenced the fate of countless people. She inspired a mighty victory and brought peace to the land. A mother life heroine for sure.

6) St. Augustine’s Mother – Monnica

Mom Qualities: She had a tough life and marriage but once she found God she prayed ceaselessly for her kids to find Him too. In his accounts, Augustine discusses at length how the insistent faith of his mother influenced his own.

7) Susanna Wesley

Mom Qualities: Considered to be the mother of Methodism, Susanna’s life was hard. She had 10 surviving children whom she intensely home schooled with very few resources. She’s also known for spending one on one devotional times with her children once a week.

8) Elisabeth Elliot

Mom Qualities: When her husband was murdered in the mission field, she stayed in the country and eventually went to live among the tribe that killed him. She was determined, faithful, steady and shared her loving faith with a countless number of people.

9) Gladys Aylward

Mom Qualities: Flunking out of missionary school didn’t stop her from moving internationally and taking in orphans. She was brave, determined, a survivor and personable.

10) Sojourner Truth

Mom Qualities: Oppressed by slavery, the color of her skin and her gender- Sojourner Truth inspired countless people with her determination to share the news of Jesus. She was a determined and faithful minister, abolitionist, and mother to many.

10 Moms We Love in Movies

1) Black Panther: Wakanda Forever – Angela Bassett

Mom Qualities: One of the hardest things a mother can possibly experience is losing a child. Queen Ramonda goes through this tragedy, but still remains queen and mother to Shuri. She is genuinely one of the strongest people, let alone mothers, in modern day movies.

2) Akeelah and the Bee – Tanya Anderson

Mom Qualities: She wants to protect her kiddo, but she also wants her to reach for the stars. She’s tough and loving.

3) The Incredibles – Helen Parr

Mom Qualities: Dedicated, heroic, and all around super. She’s not perfect, but it sure is evident that she loves her family and will stretch as much as she can to take care of them.

4) Kiki’s Delivery Service – Osono

Mom Qualities: Kiki’s caring guardian. She’s a kind guidance in her life.

5) The Sound of Music – Maria von Trapp

Mom Qualities: Empathetic, bold, and musical- Maria may not have been the best nun but she’s an amazing mom.

6) Emperor’s New Groove – Chicha

Mom Qualities: She’s strong, calm, confident, sarcastic, and smart. Chicha is one of my favorite moms. She’s got 8,000 plates spinning being pregnant, getting onto her husband while also helping him with some crazy plan- she does it all with sarcasm and smiles.

7) It’s a Wonderful Life- Mary Bailey

Mom Qualities: She’s a steady mom, encouraging, and loving. Even when life gets crazy- she knows it will all work out.

8) Brave – Elinor

Mom Qualities: It’s her way or the highway, until she realizes what it’s doing to her daughter. She changes course for her kids while being loving and protective.

9) Lilo and Stitch- Nani

Mom Qualities: Nani is Lilo’s guardian- and big sister. It’s a tough gig, but she’s tougher. She’s brave, strong and loving.

10) Moms Night Out- Allyson

Mom Qualities: She’s so relatable. All she’s ever wanted is to be a mom, but her life and lack of confidence is overwhelming her. It takes a sit down with a biker to remind her that she’s exactly the mom her kids need.

10 Moms We Love in TV Shows

1) Gilmore Girls – Lorelai Gilmore

Mom Qualities: Best friends with her daughter and the viewers who feel like we know her. Lorelai is tough, sarcastic and will do anything for her kids.

2) Fresh Off the Boat – Jessica Huang

Mom Qualities: She may not be the most comforting person, but if you need a straight-forward, no-nonsense woman, you can’t get much better than Jessica Huang. Her love for her family comes through with every quip and question.

3) Downton Abbey- Cora Crawley

Mom Qualities: While this series is filled with great moms. We love Cora for her loving determination to help bring her family into the modern era. She was the perfect mixture of grit and grace to get the job done.

4) Black-ish – Rainbow Johnson

Mom Qualities: A top notch surgeon and a totally relatable mom. She often struggles with mom guilt but she’s so strong and caring- a truly amazing mom.

5) This is Us – The Pearson Moms

Mom Qualities: All of the Pearson moms are fiercely flawed and loveable in their own way. Rebecca, Beth, Kate (and probably Kevin’s kids mom or moms?!?!?!) are all amazing moms. They’re brave, fierce and determined to give the best of themselves to their kids.

6) The Simpsons – Marge Simpson

Mom Qualities: Oh Marge….Sarcastic, oblivious, relatable and funny. Thanks for helping us laugh about our own family goofs for so long.

7) Parenthood – The Braverman Moms

Mom Qualities: It’s impossible to pick a Braverman mom. Divorce, cancer, and everyday pains- they’re not taking down the Braverman clan. Fiercely loyal, loving, flawed, funny and relatable. They’re one of our favorite families on TV.

8) Reba – Reba (and even Babera Jean!)

Mom Qualities: She will do anything for her kids. Even if that means befriending her husbands new wife. A comedy that we can watch over and over again, Reba marches in motherhood with grit and grace. Eventually teaching her daughter how to be a mother too.

9) Sister Sister- Lisa Landry

Mom Qualities: Twins separated at birth? Not a problem for Lisa! She’s loud and awkward, but no one loves her girls more fiercely than Lisa. we just love how relatable and fun she is.

10) Stranger Things- Joyce Meyers

Mom Qualities: Talk about following your mother’s intuition- Joyce is tough and will literally go to the ends of the earth (and back again) for her kids and their friends.

11) Leave it to Beaver- June Cleaver

Mom Qualities: No TV mom list is complete without June. The quintessential housewife and mother from the 50’s. Calm, caring, and on top of it. The actress was raising boys of her own at the same time, which I thought was a cool momma fact.
