Quick Summary of My Spy:

A soldier is trying to change the trajectory of his career but being a spy isn’t quite the same as the military life he knows. He suddenly finds his CIA career on the line and dependent on a super smart 9 year old girl.

This is a solidly cute family action flick that is light, fun and safe to watch with your pre-teens and teens. A little bit of saving the world, a dash of romance, and a whole lot of being manipulated by a 9 year old- a recipe for a great summer movie night.

My Spy Parent Review

-Characters & Acting:

This was really well directed and acted. It’s a cheesy movie, but the acting was not off-putting like in your typical cheesy family comedy. Chloe Coleman, Dave Bautista, and Kristen Schaal were a really dynamic trio that really elevated the movie beyond what I was expecting. They were very relatable.

-Script & Story:

I’m a huge fan of these family comedy movies, like The Pacifier. I was expecting this one to be a little more family friendly, but I really did enjoy it. The story was generally predictable but there were so many clever lines that kept us laughing.

I really wished they had changed just a few things so that it could have been enjoyable for a younger audience too, but I’m glad they didn’t put anything else in to increase the rating too. Really didn’t appreciate some of the cursing being pointed towards the younger kids in the movie. But overall it wasn’t an amount of language that personally made me uncomfortable watching it with a teen. I really liked the humor the way it was and am glad that they didn’t try to shock with unnecessary inappropriate jokes. A light and fun watch overall.

-Other:

Originally slated for theatrical release the week before spring break, it came out as a direct to streaming quarantine flick instead. I’m sure it would have done marvelously well as a spring break movie and I hope that it exceeds streaming expectations. It’s an Amazon Prime Video exclusive right now, and I assume it will be available to rent or buy at a later date. It’s a fun and light watch great for a summer movie night.

Favorite Moments:

I loved pretty much all of Sophie and JJ’s interaction. Chloe Coleman is only 11 y’all! She really does an amazing job. The particular placement of some important plans was also a really funny moment for me. My favorite thing overall was how much it made us laugh and that it ended so well.
