Quick Summary of Dog Man: Mothering Heights
Dog Man and all of his friends are again tested by super-size villains. Who will save the day? And how many potty jokes will Li’l Petey and Molly get in?
This is the 10th book in the Dog Man series. And it’s a loved series for a reason- it’s really clever and fun! The title is a fun play on Wuthering Heights, and that’s not the only literary cleverness included in the book! Check out our full review for Dog Man Mothering Heights below!
Dog Man: Mothering Heights Review (Dog Man Book 10)
**SPOILERS BELOW THIS POINT**
The book opens with a quote from Vincent Van Gogh: “…love is something eternal. It may change in aspect, but not in essence.” This sums up the message of the tenth entry in the Dog Man series. Like the others, we have Dog Man and friends (a lot of them) fighting evil. As in many of the other books, the evil characters are inanimate objects that have grown to a large size and become animated. And, in what is also a recurring theme, Dog Man is a central character, but not the only one who fights and saves the day.
Aside from the main conflict, Petey is giving an interview to Sarah Hatoff (the investigative journalist) about how he changed from being evil to good (intended or not, there is a similarity to Les Miserables in part of the story). Ultimately, it was his mother who always was forgiving, and who never gave up on him. When Petey cloned Li’l Petey, that love became something new. Although Petey did not see it at first, he came to see his mother in Li’l Petey….who always forgives, always believes, and never gives up hope.
Lots of general humor, lots and lots of potty humor, and, in a first for Dog Man, a little romance. On first read, not my favorite (I still like Fetch-22 best), but a great investment for readers young (and old).
–Why Read Dog Man: Mothering Heights-
Dog Man books are always a lot of fun to read. There are always new twists. And, the characters keep developing. There is a huge difference between the characters in book one and the characters in book ten – as there should be in good writing. Pilkey consistently stresses friendship, family, and the love that connects this group that has come together around each other.
-Is Dog Man Appropriate?-
Is there a boatlaod of bathroom humor- yes. Are there things I don’t necessarily want my kids repeating- YES.
But as noted in other Dog Man reviews, reading books that teach love and compassion is almost counter-cultural today. The book is completely consistent with genuine Judeo-Christian values.
It’s a good story with a lot of heart and some great lessons. I would absolutely consider it appropriate for kids 7+ who can handle the humor and absorb the heart of the story.
Dog Man: Mothering Heights Discussion Questions
- Take a look at the cast of characters at the beginning. Which two would you like to be the most? Why do you like them?
- What is your strength and your weakness?
- Who has loved you like Petey’s mother loved him? What did that love feel like?
- We know that things we can hold in our hands do not last forever. Petey says love lasts forever. Do you think he is right? What are some other things that might last forever?
- Use the guides at the back of the book and do one of the drawings. Do you think you could draw for comic books or graphic novels?
- Did you know that apples (and most fruit) had an acid? What are some other acids in fruit?
