Is the New Space Jam Movie Appropriate for Kids?!

There are a few things to be aware of before watching Space Jam 2 with younger kids (Older kids should be fine). There is a few instances of very mild language (hell, butt, etc). As to be expected in this kind of movie, there is quite a bit of cartoon humor and violence. This is especially seen in the antics of Wile Coyote and the Roadrunner but also comes in throughout the other characters. Lastly, there are some mild creepy creatures on the Goon Squad (Villain team). There are team members who are snakes, spiders, and fire monsters. None of these are designed to be super scary, but younger viewers may find them too intense.

Overall, Space Jam: A New Legacy provides a generally family-friendly movie that is safe for the whole family while also being a fun introduction to these classic cartoon characters.

Differences between Space Jam 1 and 2

  • This movie has incorporated all of Warner brothers characters and movies. You will spend a majority of the movie spotting favorite characters, which is such fun. This also allowed the characters more opportunities to play off other movies, which adds quite a bit to the entertainment. This does add a commercialized theme which is one of the biggest complaints about the movie
  • The new movie had much stronger themes of being true to yourself and family. The original was about team work and the sport of basketball, where this movie is much more about family, learning, and love.
  • Space jam 2 has a much stronger story line. The original was not always a cohesive story, but the new movie has a strong story line full of fun twists.
  • The villains – the villain in space jam 2 is a under appreciated computer program gone bad – a common theme in recent days. This villain (technology) causes rifts between the family, and almost traps millions of people in the software. The theme of technology being evil – rather than aliens like in the original space jam, is a much more relatable and recent idea.

Space Jam: A New Legacy Discussion Questions

  1. If you were going to put together a basketball team with fictional characters, who would you pick?
  2. Why was Dom so willing to side with Al G Rhythm?
  3. Which is your favorite Looney Tune and why?
  4. Do you know about social media algorithms? How do they affect you?
  5. If you could team up with the Looney Tunes, what sport would you like to play?

Final Thoughts on Space Jam: A New Legacy

The new space jam is a great end-of-summer movie for the whole family. It has strong themes of loving your friends and family and supporting their passions/letting them be themselves. It is full of good lessons, such as a parent learning and admitting that they still have a lot to learn, a child learning to embrace their passions, and that shortcuts don’t turn out well. It has a great, easy to follow storyline, a fun universe, and great CGI. You still get the same fun feeling watching all your favorite loony toons, but with more universes brought in (ex: Daffy Duck dressed up as Superman saving metropolis).

Overall Space Jam 2 was reminiscent of the original, but with better CGI, better story, and a much broader universe. It is a super fun, family friendly movie full of excitement and love. Controversial opinion? We liked it better than the first! Space Jam 2 is a great end of summer movie!
