Why Do You Need a Library Card This Summer?
You need a library card this summer. It’s not just useful for books, although who doesn’t love access to books and movies?! The library can help cut costs on summer activities, provides fun summer programs, and is a nice cool location with wi-fi. Check out these 5 reasons to make the library one of your regularly scheduled summer stops!
Did Somebody Say Free Books?
As much as I love Barnes and Noble—uhm, have you checked the price tag?! We love supporting authors and bookstores- but it adds up quickly!! Libraries give you free access to books (including ebooks and audio books) for people of all ages! Librarians live to share their love of reading and want nothing more than to find you the perfect book—many libraries even offer book referrals based off of your previous checkouts or online surveys.
Checking out books is super easy thanks to online catalogs—you can put books on hold and drop by the library to quickly pick them up! The Bentonville Public Library will even put together a book club package for you and your friends to host a fantastic book club event at home.
Museums!
Many libraries across the country offer free and reduced memberships or day passes to local museums, zoos, and cultural institutions. Through the New York Public Library you can even get free passes for you and your family to visit the Guggenheim and American Museum of Natural History! The Fort Worth Public Library offers free passes to the Fort Worth Botanical Gardens for 2 adults and children under 17! Check out your local library website to see what deals they offer!
A Full Social Calendar
As a child I LOVED going to do arts and crafts at the Fort Vancouver Public Library. Children’s librarians plan many events including arts and crafts, maker spaces, STEM challenges, special character story time, cooking classes, and more! Kids aren’t the only ones with cool library events—check your local library calendar for author visits, language classes, book clubs, movie screenings, cultural events, and even dance classes! Many libraries run special events and reading incentives during the summer—so check out your local library website for free summer entertainment!
Free Wi-Fi
Libraries offer free Wi-Fi and computer use! Library computers are great for filling out job applications, doing homework, and even printing! Before we all had iPhones I thought it was very cool to check my Facebook at the Frisco Public Library. Libraries are a safe place for people of all ages and circumstances to read, relax, and look for a variety of resources.
Fishing Poles, Movies, Music, oh my!
Libraries have SO many resources for you to use for free! Want to try a new board game for family game night? Borrow one from the library. Need fishing gear for your kid’s first fishing trip? Borrow it from the library. Looking for a movie or documentary? Borrow one from the library! (And then check out our reviews and discussion guides!!) As Arthur would say, “having fun isn’t hard, when you’ve got a library card!”
BONUS: If you are already an avid library-goer join the Friends of the Library! These groups support your local library through used book sales, fundraisers, and organizing volunteers.
