Anti/Hero Graphic Novel Review (Contains some spoilers)
If your kids love superheroes this is a good read. We are introduced to new new superheroes in the DC universe (Batman makes a guest appearance). However, getting to superhero takes some work for both of our 13 year old main characters.
Piper Pájaro is a normal 13 year old – with one difference. She is super strong. Sloane MacBrute is also 13, trying to live down her family name – and is super smart. Piper has donned a secret identity and wants to be a superhero – but so far has generally just left huge messes that need to be cleaned up. Piper is being manipulated by her grandfather, a criminal boss known as “The Bear”, and is aiding him in his criminal activities.
The two collide at the beginning of the story, and then again, as “The Bear” wants a device in a guarded facility. Piper’s parent’s invented the device, and she is determined to protect it. Unknown to either of them, the device is going to cause them to switch bodies…..
Compared to some other superhero stories, the violence is minimal. There is nothing inappropriate for the intended middle school audience. And family is very important for both main characters.
Why Read the Anti/Hero Graphic Novel
Superheros are very popular, and Anti/Hero gives us two middle school girls who help us learn what being a hero means. Finding friendship can be hard at this age, and Anti/Hero encourages kids to look beyond those who look and act like them. Highly recommended for middle school age kids. Anti/Hero has really good character development for the two leads. The supporting cast is interesting and, if the series continues, there is a lot of room for several of them to develop further.
Anti/Hero Discussion Questions:
1. Who do you relate to the most: Piper or Sloane? Why?
2. If you could switch bodies with anyone, who would it be?
3. How much do you know about your friends and what is important to them? What could you do to learn more about them?
4. Which other superheroes would you want to show up in future series?
