Quick of Cat Kid Comic Club On Purpose Summary
Melvin and Naomi have convinced themselves that they will be millionaires when their comic is published. Flippy tries to bring them back to earth, while Sarah Hatoff (the reporter from Dog Man) comes to interview the class. What is going to happen when all of these come together?
Cat Kid Comic Club On Purpose: A Graphic Novel Review: (Minor Spoilers)
Cat Kid 3 is much more about Melvin and Naomi, with their dad, Flippy, playing a major supporting role. Two things to know: Cat Kid 3 will still be funny for kids if they have not read Cat Kid 2 – but it makes a lot more sense if they have. While there is no cliffhanger, the story definitely is incomplete, and leads to book 4. Second, this book is definitely autobiographical. Naomi’s comic, “The Under Werewolves (about werewolves in, of course, underwear) is an obvious reference to Captain Underpants.
The publisher’s rejection, which includes objections including that the comic has “full frontal nudity” (wolves in underwear does not) seems to reference things that Pilkey heard himself when first trying to get published.
As with the prior two, it is fun and entertaining, and contains several comics with the comic. These are all continuations of ones begun in Cat Kid 2. Funny on their own, it helps to have read the first two Cat Kids. Pilkey uses various techniques to illustrate the stories that the baby frogs invent.
Why Read Cat Kid Comic Club On Purpose-
Finding purpose and realizing that money is not everything are underling themes. Flippy and his family are important parts of the story. The artwork and the humour are great. My one complaint is that the book feels unfinished – there is more to the story. But we will need to wait until book four for that.
Cat Kid Comic Club On Purpose Discussion Questions:
Themes to Discuss: Finding purpose in life, family
There were lots of mini-comics in Cat Kid 3.
- Which story was your favorite, and why?
- Which type of art did you like the best? Why? Have you seen other art like it?
- There are a lot of characters. Which one did you like the best?
The next two questions are about the whole book.
- If you have siblings – are they more like Melvin or like Naomi? Do you think you could write a story about your brother or sister?
- Did you learn more about drawing?
