The Adam Project Review
*****(Contains Mild Spoilers)*****

Why Watch The Adam Project-

The Adam Project is a great combination of fun, hilarious moments and heart-filled, emotional scenes. The majority of the movie is pretty light-hearted and funny. But there are also some big emotional punches. Ryan Reynolds and his 12 year old counterpart have great chemistry as they are so similar that they get on each other’s nerves. This movie is a more innocent one compared to some of Ryan Reynolds other comedy (this one is similar to Free Guy). This is a time travel sci fi, but up until the end, it is more of a vehicle for jokes and Star Wars references than a serious sci-fi.

Besides just a fun comedy, The Adam Project also has that fascinating time travel subplot- would you want to know when you die and is it ethical to change the timeline to save people. This is seen from two perspectives. The first is from the newly grieving 12 year old who is just starting to process all of his emotions surrounding his father’s death. The other from adult Adam who has a lot more reasons to want to change the timeline. How these two views interact and eventually culminate is both beautiful and heartbreaking.

The director has said in a couple of different interviews that this is a ‘fun popcorn movie but also an ugly cry one’ and it’s very accurate. There are lots of reasons to watch The Adam Project. Ellen called it ‘this generations ET’ and we totally agree! It’s a really great movie. What it ultimately comes down to is do you like these kinds of fun sci-fi drama movies?

The Adam Project quote future is sooner than you think

-Is Adam Project OK for Kids?-

The overall answer to this question will definitely depend on the experience and temperament of your kid. If they have watched sci-fi movies like this before. There is a lot more violence in this movie than say a Marvel hero movie. Overall, if your child is twelve and up, this movie provides a fun family movie night. With that said, there are a few topics covered that may be difficult or triggering for some kids.

The main subplot involves the death of Adam’s father at a young age and having to process this grief throughout this film. The other topic breached often is that of being bullied. Adam is bullied and hit violently at the beginning and a bit throughout the rest of the movie. Besides these bigger topics, there is also some foul language and rude jokes, but if your kid is old enough, these shouldn’t be a huge deterrent.
