Ice Age: Adventures of Buck Wild Parent Review
-Is Buck Wild Appropriate for Younger Kids?-
Outside of some action scenes that have some tension, this movie is tame and totally appropriate for younger children. There were not any scenes that would be too scary. There was some potty humor but nothing over the top, and not as much as in previous Ice Age movies. We would suggest it for audiences over 5, but if your younger viewer can handle the other Ice Age movies, they can handle this one!
-Characters & Acting–
None of the actors from the previous Ice Age movies returned, except for Simon Pegg as Buck. The absence of the celebrities that have previously voiced these characters is noticeable and whenever these beloved characters like Manny, Ellie, Sid, or Diego are talking, you can tell that it is a voice actor trying to sound like these celebs. The new characters are fine, and you could argue that they’re better than the returning characters. Justina Machado does a good job of playing Buck’s former partner Zee, and Utkarsh Ambudkar has some great moments as the villain Orson. But it does tell you something when the actors will not return for the next movie. Safe to say this series is thawing out…
-Script & Story for Ice Age 6-
The story revisits some of the concepts from the third Ice Age movie, Dawn of the Dinosaurs. We’ve seen the herd in the Lost World before, but this one is focused on the Ellie’s witty brothers, Crash and Eddie escaping to the Lost World to prove to the herd that they can survive on their own. The story isn’t too bad, just predictable, and uninventive. It’s not blazing any new trails, and it feels like the Ice Age series is almost jumping the shark. Zee and Buck’s friends to enemies to friends arch was the most interesting story element, despite its predictability. It’s definitely not the worst kids movie story-wise. There are definitely some good discussion points.
-Film Quality of Ice Age 6-
The animation was the most disappointing aspect of this movie for me. The character models look unpolished, and their movements are disjointed. Most of the other movies have better graphics than this, and they came out a decade ago. The most disappointing scene in my opinion was the first scene back in the Lost World. Crash and Eddie are telling the audience how beautiful it is, but it doesn’t look that great, especially in comparison to the first scene in the Lost World in Dawn of the Dinosaurs.
Conclusion
-Is Buck Wild Good?-
It’s ok to miss this one. It’s lacking in creativity and heart, and there are lot of other amazing films on Disney+ that are more worth your time, including the other Ice Age films. However, if you just need something new to turn on for your kids, this movie would work for that. It’s not worth a family movie night though.
