Sneakerella Review

-Is Sneakerella Appropriate?-

Overall, this movie doesn’t have many things that would prevent any viewers from watching it. The only thing that could be triggering for some is the mild emotional abuse that happens towards El. This is done mostly by his step brothers. If you are trying to watch with very young kids, they may lose interest as it is a drama with a few songs, but nothing too flashy. Besides that, this movie is appropriate for almost all viewers.

Characters

Personally, the characters is what drew me into this movie. El is immediately likable and you want to see him succeed. His relationship with his family was also very interesting. Unlike the original story, his stepparent isn’t really evil. Rather Trey, the stepfather, just cannot figure out how to communicate and get through to his stepson after the death of his wife. The real cruelty comes from his stepbrothers who are set on making sure that he does not succeed.

There is a fun dynamic between El and Sami. Sami is El’s best friend who consistently has his back, even if it sometimes gets him trouble. The other fun dynamic is actually between Adrian King’s two daughters, Kira and Liv. They both are set on impressing their father, but rather than becoming mean toward each other, they try to support each other.

Plot

Obviously, the plot of this movie is heavily influenced by Cinderella and actually makes several references to the classic Disney film. Despite this, they were able to make a few fun changes to bring into the modern age. There are a lot of changes to the original plot, but the overarching story remains there.

The biggest difference in plot was how El and Kira meet. While waiting in line for the newest sneakers, Kira helps out El and they end up spending the day together. Things go from there and it eventually happens where El takes a pair of awesome shoes that he had created to “The King’s Ball.” Upon having to leave at midnight, he accidentally leaves a shoe which leads to a social media contest to find him.

The emotional crux of the story is El trying to save his late mother’s small shoe shop. This coincides with Kira’s father looking for the next big thing in the sneaker world. Although a relatively predictable movie overall, it is a fun journey with some fun moments and some fun music.

Music

There are a lot of fun music numbers in Sneakerella. El (Chosen Jacobs) and Kira (Lexi Underwood) perform all of their songs very well, which is impressive due to the varying styles, rhythms, and moods. Even in just one song (In Your Shoes), El is grieving his late mother while also having romantic thoughts towards Kira and intertwines them pretty well.
