Lightfall: Shadow of the Bird Review

This is the second installment of Lightfall series. Bea and Cad continue their quest to stop Kest, the mythic bird who stole the sun, and save Irpa. While Kest seeks to destroy the great structures that give light to Irpa, Bea and Cad seek out the help of a water spirit known as Lorgon, seeking a way to destroy Kest. But sometimes things are not as they seem.

(Spoilers past this point)

Until about 2/3 of the way through I suspected that this book was just a way to move us forward. Good graphics and story but standard fare. The things got interesting.

Lorgon explains that Kest created the sun and is the source of light. Why did Kest then destroy the sun? The people of Irpa, in their greed, took something from Kest. And the stories begin to contrast and come together

Why Read Lightfall: Shadow of the Bird-

When reading a series my primary question is: Am I so invested that I want to read the next book? And there are plenty of fantasy series where the answer is “no”. Lightfall is answered “yes”. He, on the other hand, is far too rash. I suspect that the weight of being the last (as far as we know) of his species drives his bravado. But he is also very loyal. It will be interstate to see where this goes.

Lightfall 2 Discussion Questions

Themes to Discuss: heroes quest, bravery, courage

  1. What is bravery? Who is the bravest character in this story?
  2. The current inhabitants of Irpa completely misunderstood Kest’s motives. What does this story tell us about trying to understand the actions of others?
  3. Was Lorgon more fearsome or humorous?
  4. Bea’s loyalty to Cad produces a result neither anticipated. Can being too loyal have unintended consequences?
  5. Why do you think Cad is so driven to defeat Kest?
