Cheaper by the Dozen (2022) Parent Review:
**Spoilers Beyond This Point**
-General Review & The Old Vs. The New Cheaper by the Dozen (2022)-
The movie stays fun and light even when dealing with serious topics, which sometimes works and sometimes makes the dialogue extra over the top cheesy. I would absolutely say the same thing about the first two editions as well. And while the kid actors did a great job- there was still just some disconnect. Some of the lines were just not well written. And you just did not believe that they had all been siblings, the interactions were so stiff in places (and you could say that is part of being in a blended family- yes) but again, that’s similar to the first two. Each new edition has fixed things about the older ones and has been a little more socially aware. I enjoyed the remake, but I am a fan of cheesy family movies. Was it better than the other two? Not really, but that’s OK.
-Is the Cheaper by the Dozen Appropriate?-
*Parent/Guardian Warnings*
While the movie does not have anything that I would consider totally inappropriate for younger kids- it would definitely bore them. There is a small amount of cursing and language. And there are references to things like sex and drugs that would fly over the heads of younger viewers. But you should be aware that there is a heavy blended family storyline that includes divorce, adoption, racial tension, kinsman foster care and more in very stereotypical, often cheesy, ways. It could be a good catalyst for discussion, but it might also not. As a transracial adoptive and foster parent, I found a good bit of it relatable but also SUPER cringey in parts. I definitely would not want my kids watching it without me and would have to gage whether or not they, personally, would laugh through those parts or take it painfully to heart. And also consider whether or not watching a blended family successfully (although comedically) co-parenting would upset them. Overall a fairly bland comedy that you wouldn’t miss anything by skipping- and if there’s a chance that it will provide more pain than laughter, than skip it.
-Is the New Cheaper by the Dozen Worth Streaming?!?-
Yes and no. If you like a good cheesy family film and none of the above warnings concern you- than it is absolutely worth streaming. It can be a great and fun family movie night. But if you do not enjoy cheesy family comedies, this is not a great one and you are not missing anything. The other two versions are pretty similar overall- if you liked them, there is a high chance that you will enjoy this one. For me it was worth streaming, but not as a family movie night. The new Cheaper by the Dozen (2022) is an average family comedy that was fun but ultimately forgettable. There are many other movies more worth streaming on Disney Plus for family movie night.
