If you live in North Texas, near the DFW area, consider visiting downtown Frisco. The new Frisco library opened at the beginning of March 2023. It is such a fantastic space! There are fun and unique reading nooks everywhere. Plus an incredible amount of available electrical outlets, which is always a nice thing. The Frisco library play place is incredible.

5 Basics About the Frisco Library Play Place: Know Before You Visit

Not only does it have a really impressive collection of children’s literature, but there are a lot of fun extras for families with young children.

“Rexy” is a life-size T-Rex that greets you when you walk in, which is super fun for dino-loving kids. Looking for story time? The story time rooms are large, which is great for littles. There is also a large playroom in back that is blocked off to keep the sound inside. The new Frisco library play place is amazing! It’s a cross between a Playstreet Museum and a small section of the Sci-Tech Discovery Center (Which is right next door, near the national video game museum as well!!)

Important Information about the Frisco Library Play Place

*Age: It’s meant for kiddos up to 5 years old. There is an area specifically for babies.
*Cost: It’s free and you do not have to have a library card or sign up for anything to go inside.
*Time: It opens when the library opens and shuts down an hour before the library closes.
*Is It Busy: There is a capacity limit and it is often very busy. It seems to be the most empty around nap time or school pick up.
*Location: It’s located at the back of the children’s area on the first floor of the library.
*What Is It?: Tiny Town and Kid’s Club has multiple little houses and buildings where kids can use their imaginations to play. There is also a science section with microscopes, legos, and cars.

1. It’s super fun for kids!

There is a strongly encouraged age limit of up to five years old. There are things that would interest slightly older siblings though!

There’s a delightful little baby/toddler section with lots of engaging toys. Kids can enjoy a play railroad, a market, a veterinary clinic, an engineering section and a fun science room with a LEGO racing track.

The Frisco library play place opens with the library and stays open later than your typical indoor play spaces.

2. There is a Small Capacity Cap at The Frisco Library Play Place

When you arrive, you check in at the desk in front of the play area. They keep count of how many people are inside and how much space is left.

When we were there, the line to get in was very short and went very quickly. It was maybe four families long and everyone got in within 15 minutes.

3. It’s Free, Temperature-Controlled, and Educational

I mean, what more can a preschool parent ask for in Texas?! Not only are there a lot of opportunities to play and use your imagination but there are also spaces to connect the play to books. There is no cost to play in Tiny Town and Kid’s Club in the new Frisco Public Library play place. But if you want to check out books you will need to get a library card. McKinney or Frisco residents can get a card for free, if you live in another city you will have to purchase one.

4. It’s Self Supervised

When you visit a paid play area, there is typically a fair amount of supervision and consistent cleaning. But this is a very large play area that is not heavily supervised. This means kiddos could be making decisions you otherwise wouldn’t let them make (like climbing on something you are not supposed to or taking the pretend food into the vet clinic).

There are not employees walking around constantly cleaning and putting back toys or enforcing the play rules.

It also means you have more parents walking around. My kiddo got hit in the face by a diaper bag more than once. It’s not necessarily a bad thing, just something to be aware of.

5. It’s Large Enough to Get Lost

I turned around to put a tomato back on the shelf and my kid walked into the next room without me knowing. There are multiple rooms and nooks in this play space, and while it is enclosed it is still really easy for a kiddo to misplace their adult.

So when you walk in, set up a meeting space if they get lost. Talk about making sure they can always see you. And have a conversation about not walking out with anyone besides their own grownups.
