Quick Haunted Mansion 2023 Summary
We get introduced to Ben Matthias who is an astrophysicist meeting a woman who is into ghost tours. We jump to him in the future sadly giving ghost tours, quite grumpily. A clergyman, Father Kent, comes and offers Ben a job opportunity to help find and remove ghosts from a mansion recently purchased a woman named Gabbie. Gabbie is being haunted alongside her son, Travis. Ben, alongside a crew of misfits must use everything they have to defeat the forces of evil.

–Why Watch Haunted Mansion 2023 –
Hauned Mansion is a fun little horror movie that can appeal to younger viewers than most horror movies. There is a fair amount of the normal horror tropes, but done in a slightly lighter way, which makes it more appealing to a larger audience. With that said, this movie is definitely a bit more emotional and intense than Eddie Murphy’s Haunted Mansion.
The plot is really well written and easy to follow while also providing some fun twists and turns. This is all pushed along by a wonderful cast who plays into the style of the movie perfectly. A specially shout out to LaKeith Stanfield (Ben Matthias) and Chase Dillon who both had the most emotional roles of the film and added wonderful depth to the overall film. Also, Dan Levy was a very fun little cameo within the film.
Is Netflix’s Wednesday Appropriate for Younger Viewers?
-Is Haunted Mansion 2023 Appropriate?-
At the heart of it, Haunted Mansion is a horror movie involving lots of ghosts, creatures, and death. some ghosts are simply see-through people, but many of them are quite scary. This is especially true of the antagonist, who has his own head in a hat box.
Besides the overall creepiness, there are a few subplots involving the death of loved ones. This may be triggering for people who have recently gone through loss. Overall, we think most kids eleven and up should be able to handle this film, but it does very much depend on their ability to handle the darkness and macabre.

The Light-Hearted Ghost Interactions
Once it is revealed that most of the ghosts themselves did not have evil intentions, there were a lot of fun interactions. The egg scene as well as the egg jokes after the ghosts messed up breakfast was quite fun. Also, a fun shout out to the Scooby Doo like chase sequence.
The Nostalgia from the Ride (and prior movie)
There were quite a few familiar characters from the Disney ride- the Hatbox ghost, Madam Leota, the Bride, and the Hitchhiking Ghosts. Also, it was fun hearing the Grin Grinning Ghosts melody used in the film and fuller song in the credits.
The Surprising Amount of Emotional Depth
Unlike most adaptations of Haunted Mansion, this movie added quite a bit of emotional depth to the plot. The major theme throughout the film is facing and confronting grief, which plays into the final ghost encounter.
The Concept of the Ghost Winks
This was such a sweet little subplot. After Ben reveals his grief to the crew, Harriet talks to him about ghost winks. Ghost winks are specially moments that make us feel closer to the loved ones we’ve lost. This is especially poignant during the closing of the movie.
The Final Plot Twist
We absolutely loved the plot twist regarding Travis’ father.
The filmmakers did such a great job providing the initial reveal that Ben had lost his wife in a car accident. When Ben and Travis discuss that Travis’ dad wants him to visit, it seems so innocuous, hiding the much dark undertones that are revealed later.
