A Brief Amari and The Great Game Summary
A year after the events of the first book, Amari Peters is ready her first full summer as a Junior Agent to be much less eventful. However, on the last field trip of the school year, time suddenly stops. Amari and her best friend Elsie soon learn that the Head Minister is caught in the time freeze, and the new one has an anti-magician agenda. Amari has to battle anew the fierce discrimination of some of the supernatural world. And she is still hoping that her brother Quinton’s curse will improve.
In all of this the secretive League of Magicians offers her their leadership. When she refused, another magician seized the chance. But under their leadership there will be war. The only way to stop this is to start the Great Game, a competition to decide who will lead the magicians.

When friends move away. One of the subplots is that Elsie is going to move to England to go to school. This puts strains on Amari and Elsie’s friendship. What did you learn from them?
Second chances. In the first book, slats Van Helsing is one of the chief bullies who tormented Amari. In this book, Lara is being bullied, and Amari reluctantly gives her a second chance. By the end of the book, they are friends. What can you learn from this about giving people a second chance and about people changing?
Discrimination. Amari was bullied in the first book and is again bullied in this one simply for being who she is. A magician. In the real world people are frequently bullied for the same reading. Simply being who they are. What are some examples?
Choosing good. Another theme in the book is that you have a choice. You can live to serve others or you can live to serve yourself. What do you learn from Amari’s choices?
Why Read Amari and The Great Games.
This book in particular continues a Harry Potter feel but throws in a dose of Star Wars. The prime example of this is fair and foul magic, as seen in this quote: “A fair magician knows that self-control is the key to remaining selfless. For when we give in to fear and anger, is not our first instinct to be selfish? To put ourselves first and lash out at whatever is causing our discomfort?” Lots of things younger readers can relate to because of this. More importantly, he continues an exploration of discrimination that is subtle but very effective.
I thought book one was a tad bit better, but highly recommend both. There is s move coming, and certainly a third book in the series.

Amari and The Great Games Quotes
It’s so cool to see somebody have the courage to speak out about the change they want to see in the world.
You’d think that after learning two of his kids—Dylan and Maria—are magicians, he’d be willing to change his opinion. But as far as I can tell, that hasn’t happened. Guess preserving his worldview is more important.
It’s so easy for some people to dismiss others’ experiences because they don’t have the same problems.
Being good is a choice, Amari. And it’s one you have to keep making, again and again. No matter how hard it gets. However tempting it is to let the darkness win.
