Brief Clementine Fox Graphic Novel Summary

Clementine Fox is having some problems at school, specifically with math. Clementine’s great-aunt Marnie lives on Giant Island. Clementine recruits her friend Nubbins the squirrel and another friend, Penelope Rabbit comes along as they journey to Giant Island. There they meet new friends and have adventures as they try to find Aunt Marnie’s cabin.

Clementine Fox Graphic Novel Review

The story is cute, and, as noted above, primarily follows Clementine and her friends as they adventure across Giant Island. They meet, needless to say, a giant. They also meet some fairy-like creatures called Plips. Their parents get worried and journey to Giant Island to find them. In the end, everyone is happy.

This is a very gentle adventure story. There is not a lot of danger. Clementine and her friends do go off without seeking parental approval first and do worry their parents. This is a typical plot in adventure stories for children and young adults.

Clementine begins the book having problems with math, but at the end of the book Clementine, as she is making bread for the giant, is helped by her friend Penelope to visualize multiplication and decides that she is a “hands-on visual learner”. This is potentially a particularly good lesson for some children, and a good introduction to the concept of learning styles (the endnote says the author is passionate about color, comedy, and alternative learning). Clementine also learns that tutoring is a good thing, another potentially valuable lesson.

The art is reminiscent of watercolor. It is bright and attractive. I will note that I was not a fan of the drawing style of the characters, but I felt the story was good enough to overcome my preferences there.

And I think life should be more than numbers, Geoff. Shouldn’t we let life be an adventure?

It’s all so very cool…So very cool… But DANGEROUS, very dangerous.

Careful, you’ll bake all that rage right into your bread.

Huh, maybe math rage is our secret ingredient.

I don’t do well with this much tension in the air.

I’m Clementine Fox. Professional Amateur Adventurer.

I’ll worry about my wings, and you worry about your manners, Puckington!

I’m sorry I said you need to learn to have fun…Turns out there are a lot of ways to have fun.

I’ll tell you what I learned on this little adventure of mine. First. Avoiding your problems will make them show up at inconvenient times. Second: I am what is called a “hands-on visual learner.”
