Quick Minions & Monster Summary
Minions & Monsters is the third film in the Minions franchise. It does work as a movie on its own if you haven’t seen the first two movies though! This movie follows two “new” minions, Henry and James. Henry has a passion for art and storytelling. While most of the other minions are searching for a “big boss” Henry just wants to record their journey. The story begins in ancient times, but makes a few time jumps until we get to 1920s Hollywood. This is where we meet Max, a Hollywood director looking for his next hit!

The Callback to Classic Movies
This film was a surprising delight. From the old timey opening to the many references to some of the first films in the world, this movie had so many fun callbacks to the history of film. The movie starts going through a museum of film with several fun references to old movies (even having George Lucas himself on display). They come to the display of two minions, Henry and James, but the museum goers don’t recognize them. This leads the museum guide to delve into their history, kicking off the main plot of the story.
One of the most brilliant things about this movie is the fact that it is effectively a movie within a movie. The reveal at the end that the movie that Henry wanted to make was in fact the movie we had been watching the whole time covers so many plot holes. Since this was a movie written by minions, that is bound to happen. This also helps with little kids who may have been frightened by the monsters, because they can now see that they are just actors.

New, Fun Characters
There are lots of side characters that jump off the screen and effectively introduced two “new” minions (Henry and James), alongside a few other minions as well. I thought this was really smart for a few reasons (outside the obvious merchandising opportunities). With how many minions there are, it seemed like a fun opportunity to focus on more characters than just Kevin, Bob, and the traditional crew. I loved the fact that it also shows that the minions aren’t a monolith. Although most of them seemingly want to find the new “big boss” several of them have there own wants and desires as well.
There were many subplots throughout this film as the minions regarding several new characters. Goomi is a little monster Cthulu who uses the minions to attempt to take over the world. There are also smaller characters like Max (the director) who act as a huge role within the lives of the minions. You also have Dort, an alien character who is debating on whether or not he wants to destroy the world.
Not Life Changing, But a Good Laugh
Overall, Minions & Monsters was a very fun movie and it may be the best movie in the Minion franchise. It is also a nice movie that most kids and adults can enjoy together. The classic film references can be enjoyed by the older viewers and the regular minion shenanigans can be enjoyed by all. There is still that potty humor the minions are known for, but with a bit more storyline than the other films. This movie probably won’t change your laugh, but it should give you a laugh or two.
