Why Read It- Owly The Way Home Review
Owly The Way Home is a very fun, simple read for the younger readers and a great introduction to graphic novels. The plot is very straight forward but still has some fun lessons about kindness and friendship. The actual art style of each character and animal is very cute and loveable, making you automatically drawn into each character. The length is also very good because it could also be an introduction to longer “Chapter” books that require putting down and coming back to for younger children.
Perhaps the most unique thing about Owly is the fact that he does not talk. I think this is a very interesting and potentially helpful tool in this book’s arsenal. I believe this can help younger kids feel more confident in their ability to follow the story. It will also be a fun change in style for older kids, especially the equations and illustrated thought bubbles.
Discussion Questions
1) What did you think of the artwork in the book? Did you find it confusing or easy to understand?
2) Owly always wants to be kind and he ends up becoming friends with fellow animals because of it? How did your friendships start with your best friends? Talk about a time you were kind to your friends.
3) Have you ever had a friend move away? How did it feel when they came back?
4) Fun Activity: Try to have a conversation without words, using only facial expressions and drawings.
