Trevor and Phoebe start to become interested in the town when dark secrets and mysteries begin to appear. Ghostbusters Afterlife is more of a sequel to the 1984 classic rather than a remake. The plot is intertwined in the story of the first ghostbusters while also providing fun and heartwarming modern day moments.
Ghostbusters Afterlife Review (Contains Spoilers)
-Is Ghostbusters Afterlife appropriate?-
Ghostbusters Afterlife contains a lot of supernatural creatures, these range in the somewhat silly Muncher to the much more daunting hell hounds. There is also a bit of moderate language throughout, but is mostly used as comedic effect. Throughout the film, there are also two characters who get possessed by these ghosts and have sexual relations (not shown on screen). A large portion of the plot follows the story of Callie and her coming to terms with effectively being abandoned by her father who recently passed away.
–Why Watch Ghostbusters Afterlife–
This movie does a great job at being a versatile movie. If you are a huge fan of Ghostbusters and Ghostbusters 2, this movie acts a fantasti homage and sequel to that series. On the other hand, Ghostbusters Afterlife also plays very well as a stand alone film for the newcomers. There will be a few references that may go over the viewers head, but overall does a fantastic job at providing a great story that holds up by itself.
The storyline of Ghostbusters Afterlife begins rahter simply but quickly splits into several subplots that follow each character and their interests. Our main protagonist, Phoebe, is a genius 12 year old girl who struggles with social interactions. Her character developments as she creates new friendships and gets closer with her family heritage is something fantastic to behold. To counteract her complex thoughts and motivations, Trevor, her older brother, is pretty much completely motivated by the desire to impress a girl he met in town.
There are other characters, such as their mom and teacher, who play larger roles in the plot. This movie builds up all these little subplots and then has a lot of fun letting them loose and intermingle in really fun and sometimes emotional ways. The culmination of the story is surprisingly emotional as Phoebe stands up for her family and is then support by the ghost of her grandfather. This leads to the emotional crux of the movie as you get to see the final interactions with their grandfather and his friends and family.
