Quick Cat Kid Comic Club: Perspectives: A Graphic Novel Summary
Cat Kid (Li’l Petey) is back with Molly to give drawing lessons to the twenty-one baby frogs. But will they spend all of their time goofing off (in spite of Flippy watching over them)? Will they learn more about drawing – and maybe more about the world and themselves?
Cat Kid Comic Club: Perspectives Review
Cat Kid is back! Author and illustrator Dav Pilkey again uses the idea of stories within a story to provide a fun, entertaining, and thought provoking graphic novel. As in the first Cat Kid, Pilkey uses various techniques, such as acrylic paints, Japanese calligraphy, photography, and collage, to illustrate the stories that the baby frogs invent. Overarching this is the story of Li’l Petey teaching drawing with perspective, and the struggle of two of the siblings (Melvin and Naomi) to get along with each other.
By using such a variety of techniques Pilkey helps foster creativity in his readers. And his trademark humour helps him introduce some adept teaching moments.
Why Read Cat Kid Comic Club: Perspectives-
The artwork? The humour? The embedded messages (environment care, bullying, respecting learning styles of kids who are different, gender equality)? The mini-comic of “Squid Kid and Katydid in particular shows a personal touch, as Pilkey has ADHD and had lots of problems in school associated with this. For any kid with ADHD this one section alone may be worth the price of the book. Several reviewers mentioned empathy, and I completely agree – it is one of the core values of the book. Highly recommended for kids 7 and up. Every home should have a copy of this.
Favorite Cat Kid Comic Club: Perspectives Quotes:
Meanwhile, at bug school…everyone else sat still…but katydid didn’t…everyone else learned the same way…but katydid didn’t.
Girls have to work harder than boys…and we still get less!!!
It’s not the size of your body that counts…it’s the size of your heart.

Cat Kid Comic Club: Perspectives Discussion Questions:
Themes to Discuss: Sibling relationships, gender equality
There were lots of mini-comics in Cat Kid 2.
- Which story was your favorite, and why? (as noted, my favorite was Squid Kid and Katydid – because it really comes from the author’s heart).
- Which type of art did you like the best? Why? Have you seen other art like it?
- There are a lot of characters. Which one did you like the best?
The next two questions are about the whole book.
- If you have siblings – are they more like Melvin or like Naomi? Do you think you could write a story about your brother or sister?
- Did you learn more about drawing?
