Secret Headquarters Review: (May Contain Spoilers)
–Is Secret Headquarters Good?-
Secret Headquarters definitely is a bit of a mixed bag. I would say if your kids are into superheroes but aren’t quite old enough for the Marvel franchise, this is a fun movie to get that superhero taste. The acting from the kids is pretty well done. I particularly think Walker Scobell did really well with this film. The other kids play off each other well as the balance their responsibilities with middle school drama.
On the other hand, there is a lot to be said about the lack of follow through on a lot of this movie. It feels like there are endless strings that were built up, but then left limp. On top of that, Owen Wilson and Michael Pena, although great actors in their own rights, just seemed like an odd fit to me in their respective roles. I will give a shot out to Jesse Williams here as he actually did a pretty good job of conflicted villain in this film.
Lastly, the overarching plot was paced and implemented oddly to me. It seemed to reveal a whole bunch right up front and then slowly drag through the parts that could have been used to build up emotions connections, but didn’t. So, is Headquarters good? Overall, I think it depends on what you are looking for. If you want a fun, fairly simple superhero story with some funny moments, this is for you. If you have high expectations for plot and character development, you may skip this one.
-Is Secret Headquarters Appropriate?-
A big plot point of Secret Headquarters revolves around the divorce of Charlie’s parents and the rejection that Charlie is constantly feeling form his dad. Some of this does get resolved, but kids who have recently experienced this kind of loss may find this plot point difficult.
There is quite a bit of mild violence and action that could be scary for very young viewers. Overall, Secret Headquarters has considerably less violence than your average superhero movie. The only difference I would note is that some of this violence is directly and indirectly aimed toward children. Other than that, this movie is pretty appropriate for most kids.
