Quick Jane Summary

Jane is a show inspired by the work of Jane Goodall. It follows Jane Garcia, a young environmentalist who is trying to save the earth in any way she can. She uses her knowledge of animals and her imagination to educate others in her life, primarily her best friend David. This fun show is all about using your imagination and making a difference.

Jane Show Review

-Is Jane Appropriate for Young Kids?

This show is geared towards elementary kids. Younger kids might get bored with Jane’s exposition about the animals she’s learning about, but older kids who love animals will have a great time! There are also scenes where they are interacting with endangered animals that might scare younger viewers.

-Shows Similar to Jane-

It reminds me of Go, Diego, Go (the Dora spin-off about her cousins who live in the jungle helping animals), except Jane is live action, with slightly more imagination involved. It’s for a slightly older audience than Wild Kratts, Dino Dana, and Octonauts.

-Jane Characters & Acting-

The cast is great, especially Ava Louise Murchison in titular role of Jane. She’s the perfect amount of passionate and plucky! The rest of the cast is fantastic, including Jane’s mom, played by Tamara Almeida, and David, played by Mason Blomberg. They do a great job supporting Jane and helping her think things through when she’s a little too focused.

-Jane Story & Script-

Each episode follows Jane as she tries to help various animals by learning lots about them and teaching others around her about the animals as well. It is not the most amazing writing, but kids will enjoy Jane’s antics. One of my favorite details is Jane’s chimpanzee, Greybeard. When we see him from Jane’s perspective, he’s a detailed CGI animal, but when we see Greybeard from adults’ perspectives, we see him as a stuffed animal. It’s a cool way to show how overactive Jane’s imagination is, and helps ground viewers in what is real, and what is Jane’s imagination.

Jane Discussion Questions

  1. What is your favorite animal?
  2. How can you help protect the animals and environment around you?
  3. Jane doesn’t always get along with other kids because of her love of animals. What does it look like to stand up for your beliefs, even if it doesn’t make you popular?
  4. What do you think Jane’s motto “Only if we understand, will we care. Only if we care, will we help. Only if we help, can they be saved” means?
