5 Lessons from Frozen 2 & a Parent Review with Discussion Questions.
Know Before You Go:
Movie: Frozen 2
Rating: PG
Age Suggestion: 4+
Running Time: 1 hour 43 mins
Release Date: November 22nd, 2019
Stars: 4 out of 5
Themes: Growing up, self-identity, family history, depression, and maturing
Warnings: This movie is much darker than the first installment. There’s more drama and more jump scares/ scary images. If your kiddo can handle the movie Brave, you should be set. *Be aware also that this movie (again) deals heavily with parental loss- I would absolutely not let my foster littles go see this alone or without a good counseling session afterward.*
Quick Summary:
Olaf wants everything to stay just the way it is, but there’s unrest in Arendale. Do Elsa’s powers have anything to do with it? Follow Olaf, Anna, Elsa, Kristoff, and Sven on their journey to rescue their kingdom.
So many sequels are not as enjoyable as the first movies, or they’re just cash grabs. While there are definitely cash grab moments (looking at you permafrost Olaf and gorgeous new princess dresses that I want in adult sizes!) They really did an amazing job with this. Frozen 2 was a little cheesier than the first one, and a bit more dramatic but it was every bit as enjoyable as the first movie. (*There is a short after the credits scene*)
Warning: **SPOILERS beyond this point**
5 Lessons from Frozen 2
This movie was just chalk full of lessons and usually when a movie does that, none of the lessons are really drawn out fully or done well, but this was the exception to the rule. There were a lot of great points that stood out to us- but these were the top five lessons from Frozen that stood out to us.
1) We can accept hard truths and take the next right step.
2) You don’t have to have powers to save the day and be fierce.
3) It’s good to admit your wrongs, it’s better to try to right them. Especially as it applies to how you treat other people.
4) Emotions are not a bad thing and expressing them is good for guys and girls.
5) You have to hold onto love when life changes are scary. We can’t bypass the hard parts of transformation to get to the next happy chapter.
Movie Discussion Questions:
1) Who was your favorite character from the first movie? Your favorite new character?
2) What was your favorite song from this movie?
3) What was your favorite Olaf moment?
4) Have the changes in life ever felt scary to you? What made you feel better?
5) How did the two different groups of people see each other and how did they eventually come together?
5) Have you ever sang a song about your emotions? What would it feel like to do so?
6) Doing the right thing isn’t usually the easy thing- what helps you make the next right choice?
Frozen 2 Parent Review:
***SPOILERS BEYOND THIS POINT***
Characters & Acting:
– All of the characters (and their voice actors are back!) The voice acting was WONDERFULLY done!
-I loved the new characters (and animals). But I was a little sad that Honeymaren, the new girl, did not have a bigger part as it seemed to show in the promotional material. Although I am quite sure that there will be another movie or series.
-I was very impressed with all of the original main characters. It seemed like there was a lot more drama in this movie and a lot more emotion and they were able to portray this without deviating from the joyous characters shown in the original.
Script & Story:
– The story was more impressive than I was expecting, especially from a sequel. It felt more like a musical than the first movie and didn’t flow quite as well, but it was still quite enjoyable
– As mentioned above, there were several lessons laid out at the beginning and the way that several of them were wrapped up was done very well.
– It would have been nice for Kristoff to have played a bit of larger role in the script.
Film Quality:
-The first movie was set during the summer and this one was set in the fall. You could tell by the imagery that this movie was darker and more intense than the first one.
-As we have come to expect with modern day Disney movies, the artistry and graphic design is absolutely stunning. There are several scenes of nature that if you were to pause would appear to simply be a photograph.
Favorite Moments:
-I loved all of the Olaf scenes! Especially his re-telling of the whole first movie and the reaction of the commander.
-The amazzzzing 80’s-90’s power love ballad in the middle of the movie. Yay for Kristoff having his own great song.
-I’m usually not fond of the pop re-makes at the end of the movie but I enjoyed the rock versions of the 2 songs during the credits (One done by Panic at the Disco! and the other done by Weezer)!
Final Thoughts:
–This is a good sequel! It felt like it was written with the kids in mind who have grown up with Frozen. Those 4-6 yr olds who loved the original movie who are now struggling with that rough entrance into Middle School. And they did it well! More than that, the 5 lessons from Frozen were widely applicable to every new stage in life! While the music probably isn’t going to catch on as much as the movie from the first, it was a good musical! The story was great, the voice acting was wonderful, and the movie was visually stunning. A must see for Disney and Frozen fans that can handle a few scary scenes.
