Godzilla: King of the Monsters Discussion Questions (Contains light spoilers)
- One of the recurring themes in Godzilla movies is to ask the question – “Who is the monster”? (In the 1950’s the real evil was nuclear war) In this movie, who were the monsters? Have you ever acted a little monstrous? How does deliberately doing evil fit in to all of this?
- One of the Doctors betrays Monarch for what they think is a good cause. Later, faced with losing their child, they turn around. Another word for turning around is to repent. Does it sometimes take a huge event to get us to repent? Why? Have you ever done something that you thought was good, and later found out that it was not really good?
- Multiple characters sacrifice themselves to save the lives of others. Hopefully you will never be asked to sacrifice your life, but you make choices to serve yourself or to serve others. Why did they make the choices they did? If you were in their place, would you be willing to make that choice?
- Which of the new monsters did you think look the coolest?
- Which of the monsters was your favorite?
Godzilla: King of the Monsters Reviews (More spoilers below)
Thoughts from the Hobbit:
- If you are a Godzilla fan, this gets about an A-. The opening was a bit slower than I thought it needed to be – but once everything kicked in it exceeded expectations.
- The movie opens with a shot of the ending of the prior movie – as Godzilla leaves San Francisco. It then sets up what is going to happen – one of the “good guys” has been corrupted and joined forces with the villain. Their goal is to “cleanse” the earth by releasing all of the “Titans”.
- Unfortunately, they start with Monster Zero. If you are a fan, you already know that Monster Zero, aka the three-headed monster King Ghidorah, originates in outer space and is one of Godzilla’s chief nemeses, so you can see where this is going. True to form, Rodan aids King Ghidorah and Mothra aids Godzilla. In the middle of the movie, there is an attempt to kill the monsters using an Oxygen Destroyer – another nod to the original 1954 Godzilla.
- The music blends in a lot of the old Godzilla theme music, some of the Mothra theme, and is really good. The cinematography was great. The storyline makes great sense if you know Godzilla.
- A persistent theme has been to examine who (or what) is the monster? How do we define “monster”? One of the great things to discuss is that there is a difference between bad as in choosing to do evil and bad natural things (a tornado, for instance).
- One final note – stay through the credits. There is good music, information as the credits start rolling, and a final post credits scene. You will also note that the four major creatures are credited as playing themselves…..
Thoughts from the Princess:
- Although this might be just another monster movie to some, for fans of Godzilla, King Kong, or anything similar, you will love this. A beautiful story of love, family, and what one will do for the good of mankind, Godzilla King Of Monsters is a great movie.
- The CGI was BEAUTIFUL there is just no other way to describe it. The monsters will leave you in awe, and believing they might show up in your day to day life, the action sequences were not overpowering or underwhelming and the story was well developed, as were the characters. There are multiple incredible displays of self sacrificing love and fighting for what is right.
- From a Godzilla fan, this movie blew my mind and made me extremely happy. It had incredible action scenes, a great story, and a brilliantly designed hero! If you are looking for an awesome monster movie this summer, this is it.

One point I believe the movie implied is it doesn’t take creatures to be monsters. People can definitely be monsters when they become so self centered they forget to feel. One of the main characters exhibits this in her actions.
That’s an excellent point!
I definitely agree that people being monsters is one of the points.
