You VS. Wild Review

Can You Survive the New Netflix Interactive Adventures? You Vs. Wild Review:

Title: Netflix’s You vs. Wild Review
Rating: TV-PG
Age Suggestion: The Whole Family
Episode Length: The episodes can run from about 15-30 minutes depending on how fast you survive…. or not.
Where to Watch: Netflix

If you’re hanging out with a group of people of varying ages and want to have something on the TV that’s a little more engaging than a cooking show (I’m not knocking those- I love me some Great British Baking Show, Chopped, and Nailed It) Netflix has your answer!

You Vs. Wild with Bear Grylls is a fantastic new interactive Netflix show! The best part is that it is made to be family-friendly and it’s SO much fun!

What is You Vs. Wild on Netflix?

It’s a choose your own adventure game/show mixture. But they can’t use the choose-your-own-adventure title because of copyright infringement. So they’re calling it an interactive show. They’re trying several new interactive shows. We played You Vs. Wild which is the show with the super famous survivalist Bear Grylls. The premise of the show is that you are trying to survive in the wild, or are on a specific mission in the great outdoors. There are two paths to choose and neither of them are ideal… (EG: Do you go up the tree with killer monkeys or the pit that might have killer spiders?) and YOU get to choose! The choice appears at the bottom of the screen and you use your remote to pick. There are only a couple of handfuls of choices, but it varies widely depending on what choices you make.

What age group would enjoy You Vs. Wild?

Y’all- this is WAY more engaging than we thought it would be. Personally, not a giant fan of the thought of needing to survive in the great outdoors and those types of shows don’t appeal to me. But THIS show, where you’re getting to choose what happens next? It was not only a blast to play in a group but I played/watched it last week during my toddlers nap time too!

There are some things that might scare younger ones who haven’t quite grasped the idea of real vs. TV. For example- it’s a grab the edge of your seat moment when you choose for him to walk over the rickety bridge instead of swing on a rope across the chasm and the rickety bridge breaks. Or finding the arm of a skeleton in the desert. But it is not made to intentionally be scary. It is very family-friendly. We watched it with a few pre-schoolers who quickly got bored with it, and a couple of elementary kids who stayed fairly engaged.

Is it awesome enough to watch though? You Vs. Wild Review

You Vs. Wild Review

Yes! Especially in a group. Like I said before- I’m not a fan of survivalist shows in general and I really enjoyed this. And we all learned something! Netflix really hit a home run with this one! Check out this article on how they made the show. This is a great option for group and family gatherings!

Looking for other shows on Netflix for a group or the whole family?

There’s a new game show called Flinch. It’s essentially a series of tests designed to make you flinch. Not super entertaining to me- but it might be to you. While they do cover up any cursing, this one we would definitely recommend for a slightly older audience. I don’t want my toddlers or pre-schoolers trying this stuff when grandma’s here or after she leaves. And grandma might not appreciate this one as much as she would a fun cooking show. (Of which there are plenty of fun ones to choose on Netflix.)

The other new gameshow on Netflix is Awake: The Million Dollar Game. You compete after being awake for 24 hours in regular tasks as well as mental and physical challenges. This ones a little more entertaining to me and might be to a group as well. It’s practically designed for parents or anyone who’s regularly sleep deprived.

If you’re on Hulu, check out Ellen’s Game of Games.  Generally goofy and fun games with some trivia that you can play along with in a group. Also watch an episode of American Ninja Warrior and The Amazing Race.
