Themes/ Short (spoiler free) Summary: We follow Rey and her friends as they battle for the galaxy. The story had moral tones of hope and family, along with intense actions scenes and tasteful points of comedic relief. I feel that it fit well into the series and upheld the legacy while evolving  enough to stay relevant with the current generation. (Ranger) There were the themes of love, loss, family, and hope. Overall I think this was a feel good Star Wars movie and I am thoroughly intrigued to see where they take this story and to watch it again. (Princess).

Star Wars: The Last Jedi Review:

Thoughts from The Ranger:

  1. The movie was very well done and balanced out phenomenally. Taking cues from other recent Disney works, Star Wars has a noticeable increase in comedic and light hearted elements. The humor of the film fit very well into the Star Wars universe, while upholding the legacy such a film deserves.
  2. This particular addition to the franchise made a point of introducing many animals and creatures from various planets within the galaxy. This created a much more immersive universe and helped to show how the galaxy is connected is many ways as a whole.
  3. There was one explosion scene in particular stood out to me. Never before have I been in a theatre where the entire audience is simultaneously speechless and awe stricken. The beauty and wonder of it all was enough to bring tears to my eyes. It was unlike anything I had seen before.
  4. With the passing of Carrie Fisher, I was nervous to see how they would address it in the film. I think the way in which they went about it was very respectful and beautiful while remaining subtle. I believe this is how Carrie would have wanted it to be.

Thoughts from The Princess:

  1. This movie was beautiful. It was well made, the cinematography was phenomenal, and the CGI was top notch. I have heard some complaints that it wasn’t a real set like in the previous film, but I did not find that to be distracting. To me, the beautiful lands added a bit of magic and reminded me of the older films.
  2. This movie was positive. No matter what terrible situation was faced, they were always looking for the silver lining, or an alternative option. This movie pointed to our modern day world and presented the wonderful idea that no matter what terrible situation we face, humor, hope, and trust make all the difference.
  3. This movie was downright funny. It was full of humor, and although it was sometimes misplaced, this movie made me laugh consistently. Poe Dameron made me laugh in almost every scene he was in, BB-8 proved, once again, that you don’t need words to show emotion, and Luke and Leia proved to be the sassiest siblings in the Galaxy.
  4. This movie had Porgs. Yes I am that person who loves those obnoxious little birds. They are the new Ewoks in my eyes and I think they are amazing.

Thoughts from the Ent:

The Positives:

Overall, I had so much fun watching Star Wars: The Last Jedi.  I think the cast (new and old) were superb.  Also, this movie has singlehandedly the most breathtaking scene I have ever seen in a movie.  It made me look forward to the final installation of the saga, while making me want to go back to re-watch the original trilogy and The Force Awakens.

The Negatives:

One of my biggest pet peeves with this movie was the under-utilization of some key characters.  I felt there were a few characters that had so much more potential than this movie allowed.  Also, like Thor: Ragnarok, I perceived this movie as attempting to put more humor in a movie than necessary.  Although, I think it worked well with some of the characters, others it felt very forced and superfluous .
