Fantasy is one of the most beloved genres of the Down the Hobbit Hole Family! It is filled with grand adventure, stunning magic, and beautiful imagery. There are so many shows to go through. So, we decided to compile a little list to help you find some of the best fantasy shows on Netflix! Tell us what your favorite Netflix show is right now in the comments below!

She-ra and the Princess of Power

Warnings: Some mild cartoon violence, some dark imagery that may not be appropriate for easily frightened children.

Quick summary:

Based on the She-ra from Masters of the Universe, this fantasy sci-fi mash up is a very fun watch. Adora, from Hordak, is a top commander in her fleet when she starts to learn more about her culture. Glimmer is an Etherian princess simply looking for some form of adventure. Follow Adora and Glimmer as they traverse worlds unseen.

1. Which world did you find more appealing the sci-fi world of the Hordak or the fantasy world of Etheria? Why?
2. This show is based off of TV show side character from the 80s. Which character from any show would you want to have their own show?
3. Adora learns that her entire world has been built upon lies. Have you ever believed something and found out that it wasn’t true?

She-Ra and the Princess of Power Review

This show is a pretty lighthearted adventure with some fun, relatable characters. It is fun to see sci-fi and fantasy collide while providing some interesting environments and settings within their worlds. The show definitely has its corny/cheesy times, but the character development and intriguing storylines carry it through pretty well. If you have kids who like lighthearted fantasy adventures, this is a show for you!

Kipo and the Age of Wonderbeasts

Quick Summary:

In a disordered and overgrown post-apocalyptic world riddled with mutated animals, Kipo must find her way back to the safety of her burrow and her father.

Discussion Questions: 

1. What was your favorite beast? Can you create your own wonderbeast?
2. Kipo managed to stay optimistic throughout her adventure. What situations do you find the hardest to stay positive in?
3. Kipo continuously sees the best in people even when presented as bad guys. Have you gotten to know someone and realized they are just misunderstood. (Whether they are mean, unpopular, nerdy, etc).
4. Kipo went through some physical changes. Who do you feel comfortable talking about body changes with?

Kipo and the Age of the Wonderbeasts: 

The characters are done fantastically and are one of the driving forces of the show. From our main group, Kipo, Wolf, Benson, Dave, and Mandu to the crazy villain Scarlemagne, everyone is interesting and has their own motivations and charm.     

Kipo finds herself thrust into the surface world where she meets a girl named Wolf. Wolf agrees to help her get back to her burrow.  Of course, nothing is that simple on the world’s surface. Kipo must face giant bunnies, guitar playing snakes, lumberjack cats and many more to return to the safety of her home. As the story unfolds, we learn why Kipo was forced out of the burrow and Scarlamagne’s devious plot. Overall, it is an enjoyable adventure for adults and kids alike.

The Dragon Prince

Running Time: 9 20-30 minute episodes (3 seasons at this time)

Stars: 5 out of 5
Themes: Choice, responsibility, power, reconciliation, small inclusion of romance and same-sex relationships. prejudice.
Warnings: Cartoon violence, death of parents, dark imagery (still cartoonish in style)

Quick Summary:

     The world is filled with kings, dragons, tree elves, warrior elves, and so many other mythical creatures. The Dragon Prince tells the story of two princes, Callum and Ezran, who are thrust into an adventure where they must face unforeseen dangers, complete seemingly impossible tasks, and meet new friends. This show is definitely one of the best fantasy shows on Netflix!

Discussion Questions: (From Season 1)

1. One of the great things about The Dragon Prince is the amount of interesting characters. Who is your favorite character? What do you enjoy about that person/animal?
2. Ezran realizes that the giant spider is nothing but an illusion. Has there ever been a time when you thought something was scary, but then realized the thing wasn’t as scary as you originally thought?
3. When Viren tells his adult children to kill innocent people, we were taken aback. Has anyone every asked you to do something you knew was wrong? How did you handle the situation?

The Dragon Prince Review: 

The interweaving style with characters and plot in this TV show is done wonderfully. The show just continues to grow in intensity. The overall plot is very straightforward and easy for younger viewers to keep up with while being in depth enough to keep the attention of adults. The characters are intriguing with an amount of character development very uncommon in children’s tv shows! The Hollow

Themes: Meaning, Purpose, Friendship, Trust
Warnings: This show starts on the more sinister side of storytelling. There are horror elements from the very beginning (Witches, mummies, etc). Although done in a very cartoony way, it could still be scary for younger viewers

Quick Summary:

3 strangers wake up in an empty room with no memory of who they are or how they got into this room. Things unravel in a fascinating combination of fantasy, horror, and sci-fi as these three teenagers try to learn more about the world they find themselves in.

Discussion Questions: 

1. If you could pick any power to have, what would you choose?
2. Did you see the ending coming? What made you think that would happen?
3. Which character did you relate to the most? Why?
4. Trust is a huge issue in this show. If you were in a similar situation, do you think you would trust people too much or be wary of everyone?

The Hollow Review: 

This show almost comes off as a mystery because you spend so much of it just trying to figure out what is happening to the characters. This leads to some interesting adventures through a multitude of scenarios and challenging characters. Some of the characters can come off as a bit cheesy every once in a while, but are still enjoyable. The ending of this show was very intriguing and leaves the viewer wondering what’s next (Or even if there is even going to be a second season). Overall, The Hollow is a fun watch for the bigger kids in your life (7+)!

The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance

Age Suggestion:  10+ (Depending on their ability to handle scary and disturbing imagery)

Themes: Courage, Purpose, independence, moral certainty, leadership
Warnings: Dark, scary, and sometimes disturbing imagery, large intense creatures, death of family members, abuse. If you’re child watched the original Dark Crystal, they should be okay with this one with guidance.

Quick Summary:

Before the events from 1982’s The Dark Crystal, the world of Thra was at peace, or so it seemed. When the Skeksis discover a new source of ultimate power, they become obsessed and will let nothing get in between them and their newfound power.

Viewers should be aware that this show contains much of the same creatures from the original movie, but with modern technology and special effects, they can come off as a little scarier and, at times, much more disgusting.

Discussion Questions: 

1. Which character did you relate with the most? How did you relate to them?
2. Standing up to the Skeksis took great courage from the Gelfling and the Podlings. What is the most courageous or brave action you have ever seen or heard of?
3. Celadon made lots of mistakes when she became Al Maudra, but was able to reconcile with her family. Has anyone ever forgiven you for something big?

Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance Review: 

The world that Jim Henson was able to build in 1982’s The Dark Crystal has been brought forth into 2019 (and can also be enjoyed in 2020) in this grand prequel. From the beautiful Gelflings to the utterly disturbing Skeksis, the masterpiece of television is something to behold. The characters and plot leave you with such a great connection with the story. I truly hope for more seasons to fill in the backstory even further. Also, if you haven’t seen the original movie, there is so much for you to enjoy.
