Know Before You Watch:

Movie: Magic Camp
Rating: PG
Age Suggestion: 5+
Running Time: 1 hour 45 minutes
Release Date: August 14th, 2020
Themes: Magic, Friendship, Family, Teamwork
Warnings: While it is rated PG for mild humor, there really was very little rude humor (like a bunny reproduction quip) and a very low scare factor- this ones pretty safe for the whole family!

Magic Camp Quick Summary:

A bunch of kids struggling with their place in life led by a magician that’s still trying to figure out his own. Nothing can go wrong, right? Andy is back as a camp counselor to settle an old score and maybe even revamp his career in the process. Theo is a first time camper who has massive talent and massive stage fright. Can they help each other out without completely ruining camp?

It’s a really fun (and family friendly) watch that has a couple of poignant moments. The movie reminds the viewers that we have to believe in ourselves and help each other.

-Characters & Acting

The child actresses and actors in this movie were very well cast! They really did an excellent job! The adults were great as well. Adam Devine and Jeffrey Tambor’s back and forth comedy was great. I wish that Gillian Jacobs (& her fun character) had gotten a little more screen time though. I did enjoy the small pop ins from Aldis Hodge (who I loved in Leverage). All around- the characters, their growth and casting were well done for a comedic family movie.

-Script & Story

It reminded me a lot of School of Rock, but more family friendly and lighter. Is it super predictable? Yes. But this is a kids movie. And an appropriate one that has some funny moments for adults and kids. They could have done some more with the story, but they also kept it super family friendly and that outweighed any small script complaints for me.

Film Quality-

Only Disney could pull off this level of magic. There were so many believable tricks in this movie I lost count. And I know that it takes an amazing team to pull that off. That’s not even thinking about the background of being outside at camp while also simultaneously in beautiful theater buildings with scenes from Vegas. I was really impressed with the movie quality all around.

Favorite Moments

I’m easily impressed with magic tricks, so my mouth was open in shock through half of the movie. I loved them and how effortless they made them seem.

The sincere family moments were pretty sweet at the end, narrowly avoiding being too sweet.

Everyone’s comedic timing was really great in this movie.
