-Is Finding Ohana appropriate?-

Finding Ohana does have some scary sequences (including skeletons, spider bites, perilous situations). There is also some mild crude humor (mostly between the main character and her older brother). Overall, this movie should be fine for most kids over the age of 8.

-Plot/Story of Finding Ohana-

Finding Ohana starts off as a seemingly straightforward family drama as we follow Pili and her family visiting Hawaii. It takes a very fun twist as Pili’s love of geocaching takes her to a much grander adventure. This leads to a hunt for an infamous treasure. Some of the funniest scenes of the movie are Pili and Casper recreating historical moments. This ultimately leads to a sacred tomb with night watchers, and the most emotional part of the movie.

There are several subplots going on. Ioane and Hana have the romantic subplot that plays out nicely. The most beautiful subplot is that of Leilani and her father, Kimo. Their relationship had been hurt when Leilani moved her family to New York, leaving Kimo alone in Hawaii. The story of their reconciliation is difficult and beautiful. Overall, there is a lot of fun, emotional, and funny moments in this treasure hunting storyline.

-Characters-

The story revolves around Pili as she brings her brother and two friends, Casper and Hana, along with her on a grand treasure adventure. She is a very fun and passionate kid who is excited about a new adventure. Her relationship with her brother starts off a little rough, but throughout the journey, their relationship gets much closer.

Casper and Hana add a lot of great depth to the story. Casper is a boy who is consistently positive and trying to find the siliver lining. He plays off the moody Ioane very well and actually ends up having a positive effect on him. Hana is an islander who immediately comes off as likeable as she stands up for her friend Casper against the arrogant Ioane. Ioane definitely has the most character growth as he starts off as a cocky teenager, but ends up becoming humble to help his sister and new friends. And all of the characters grow as they learn how to work together.

Why Watch Finding Ohana-

Finding Ohana dives into the story of Hawaii natives. This ranges from the normal daily life to the grand island secrets. It is a very fun movie that ultimately is about the love of family. It definitely takes a lot of different tracks to get to the ultimate storyline, but every bit of it is very fun.
