Quick Summary of Lightfall Graphic Novel

An adventurous new fantasy novel about the impact of family, friendship and brave quests! Bea is the adopted granddaughter of the Pig Wizard. Out gathering plants for her grandfather, she meets Cad – who may be the last Galdurian. When they return, the Pig Wizard is gone, and has left a mysterious note. Will the two of them find the missing wizard? And what is the flame that Bea needs to keep safe? Adventures are going to abound!

Lightfall Review (Contains Spoilers)

Irpa is a unique world and is shown in stunning visuals. Cad is searching for other Galdurians, an ancient race that built the lights that now illuminate Irpa after the sun was destroyed. He is seeking the help of the Pig Wizard. Bea is distressed that her grandfather has disappeared, and so the two set off to find him.

Bea is caring the eternal flame – which is important, although we don’t know why. They have multiple adventures with an assortment of characters like a rat thief and dangerous creatures such as giant crabs. We find that both Bea and Cad are more than they seem to be, and this is an important message for kids.

This is part one, and, while it does not end on a huge cliffhanger, there are still a lot of plot threads to resolve, and if book two was here- I would immediately jump into it!

Why Read Lightfall Graphic Novel

Bea is anxious and hesitant. She has lived a very calm life for as long as she can remember with her adopted grandfather. Going on a quest is entirely new. Kids going into middle school, or high school, or facing any type of challenge will find encouragement in Bea. Cad is, on the other hand, someone who has been on an adventure almost his entire life. He has a knack for getting into (and then out of) trouble, and is totally faithful.

Bea and Cad’s friendship is not what you would expect, and should encourage younger (and older) readers to look at and value friends who are unlike them – however they may be different. Family is another major theme and is addressed below in my final thoughts.

-Characters-

The characters are a mixture of human and not human. Bea is human; Cad is a large amphibian. We have rates, dinosaurs/lizards, a blue otter type , etc. This is a world where diverse species live and interact with each other. All of the characters are well drawn and you easily become invested in caring for Bea and Cad.

-Setting/Artwork-

A good world is one that leaves you wondering why the smaller details are the way they are, and this book does it. The artwork is often dramatic and breathtaking. A really well done graphic novel.

Final Thoughts on Lightfall

It only took me a few pages to get hooked. Bea is adopted. Cad has lost not only his family but his entire race.  Together they form a unique friendship, and have, by the end of the book, really become family. There are three important concepts about family in this book. The plot is driven by Bea’s search for her adopted grandfather and Cad’s search for any remaining Galdurians.

The important takeaway from this is that a good family, however it is formed, can inspire adventures.

Lightfall Discussion Questions

1. Bea thinks she has been a burden to Cad and has not helped. In response, Cad reminds her about all they have accomplished. Have you ever felt like Bea? That you want to be brave but instead just worry? Do you have someone (friend, parent, grandparent, etc.) who reminds you that you have accomplished a lot?

2.Bea and Cad meet some interesting characters. Two of them are Grocha and Bunga. How do they help Bea and Cad? Which one do you like better, and why?

3. Cad sometimes does seem to take things lightly, maybe because he has been laughed at a lot for his quest to find the Galdurians. AS Bunga tells Bea, though, he is more than he seems. Are there things in you that are hidden? If so, what are they and who recognizes that you can be more than you seem to be?

4. Bonus activity – have you ever thought about a different world. Can you try drawing it?

Inquisitor’s Tale: The story of three medieval children (and a dog) facing a number of challenges in finding and walking the path they have been given by God.

Ghostopolis: The story of a young boy is thrust into the afterlife

For Everyone by Jason Reynolds: An encouraging letter to dreamers of all ages in four short chapters.
