–Why Watch Hollywood Stargirl-
If you enjoyed Stargirl, there is a very good chance you will like this movie as well. There are some interesting differences. In the first movie, Stargirl is a somewhat mysterious character who throughout the film becomes more and more humanized. In Hollywood Stargirl, she starts off as simply human. Luckily, she keeps her quirkiness and fun, but is grounded more in reality.
One similarity between the two films is the fact that they are both love stories, but there is also a signifcant difference. They first film is about a boy falling in love with the idea of Stargirl and Hollywood Stargirl shows a relationship more built on realistic expectations. They are both still teen romances, but the movie even eludes to the fact that Stargirl’s old relationship wouldn’t ever have really worked. Evan, played by Elijah Richardson, doesn’t get a lot of personality, but he is quite charismatic on screen and you can feel some chemistry between him and Stargirl.
Another big similarity is the great soundtrack. Although the covers are shorter than expected, there are a few original songs from this movie that really hit out of the park. One of the best parts about transitioning from covers to original music is how that actually plays into the plot of the film. Roxanne Martel, played by Uma Thurman, plays a retired musician who simultaneously encourages and is encouraged by Stargirl to get back into music.
-Is Hollywood Stargirl Appropriate?-
Overall this film is very similar to the first movie. There are two instances of very mild language, but nothing overly egregious. The main reason I probably wouldn’t recommend this film for very young viewers (below 10), is simply because it is a teen drama/romance. Most younger kids simply won’t be interested in the subject material and the soundtrack is not very upbeat. So, there isn’t much that will keep their attention throughout the film. With that said, if you think your kid would be interested and could stay attentive, there aren’t any topics or scenes that would be deemed terribly inappropriate.
