Our Commentary on Season 1 Episode 5 of The Rings of Power: Poppy’s Song Episode

The Impossible Decision

We still do not know who Adar is (but do know he does not like being called Sauron). Some of the people go to follow him; others stay to fight. The decision they are faced with is difficult. Bronwyn has always been an outcast and as a leader she is literally facing down the death of everyone around her, including her son. Really enjoyed the small scene between Theo and Arondir.

Lots of Tolkien themes. All the heroes (or potential heroes) are conflicted, which fits into the world of The Simarillion quite well. A nice reference to LOTR.

The Stranger

Speaking of conflicted. Nori is very conflicted about the Stranger in this episode! And for good reason. And while we still do not know who the Stranger is- these bonds of friendship will likely pay out in future seasons.

Poppy’s Song in Season 1 Episode 5 of The Rings of Power

Listening to Poppy’s song was a highlight!!

“That not all who wonder or wander are lost.

No matter the sorrow

No matter the cost

That not all who wonder or wander are lost. “

If that sounds familiar it might be because “not all who wonder are lost” comes from “The Fellowship of the Ring”. Poppy’s song could be a precursor to something said thousands of years later.

Another Conflicted King

These were some of our favorite scenes from the episode! We find out that Gil-Galad wants mithril as he believes the elves are dying and it will save them. And he’s willing to do just about anything to get it, as we’ve seen already through him manipulating Elrond and even Galadriel. But Durin and Elrond work it out and we just really enjoy their scenes together. Which is also a great throwback to the bond between Gimli and Legolas in The Lord of the Rings.

On to War

This is where I am probably the least emotionally invested right now. Great sword scene with Galadriel. Isildur wins back his spot on the ships, but I think there’s good reason his dad questions his motivation. And his sister certainly doesn’t want them shipping off. Curious as to where that is going to go. The richest and seemingly most well off area in the second age is also the one with the murkiest motivation, the most greed, and a lot of backstabbing.
