DC League of Super-Pets Parent Review
**Contains Spoilers**

-Is DC League of Super-Pets Appropriate for Younger Kids?-

No- in general there is a lot of cartoon violence both shown and implied that stressed out younger viewers. Many of the parents I’ve talked to have said that they would recommend it for 9. We’re going to say 7+ but please be aware that there are tense situations, violence, and more language than normal in this children’s movie.

What is the super-pets movie age range? 7yrs +

I can’t help but wonder if this had been a Marvel movie if it would have been more appropriate for younger kids. This movie felt like it missed the age demographic just ever so slightly. There are 3 instances of a bleeped-out curse word. One could be considered funny but 3 is too much.

It’s a little long for a movie aimed at kids. I was in a pretty full theatre, and several kids were restless through the 3rd act. There is a lot of talk about killing the Justice League (though they are all alive at the end). And while the tension and stakes aren’t much more intense than a normal kids movie, the overall tone is just a little darker than what I would have expected. You know your littles best, but we’re going to suggest viewers be older than 7.

-Characters & Acting in the Super-Pets Movie-

The voice acting was really great! The standouts for me were Kate McKinnon as Lulu and Natasha Lyonne as Merton. McKinnon really got into playing a villain, and her character was a lot of fun. Natasha Lyonne was by far the funniest character for me, she made me laugh out loud a couple of times. The rest of the cast is good too, with a lot of celebrities, including John Krasinski as Superman, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson as Krypto (plus 2 other characters if you stay for the post credit teaser), Keanu Reeves as Batman, Kevin Hart as Ace, Vanessa Bayer as PB, and Diego Luna as Chip, with too many others to name.

The characters and their relationships were the strongest part of the movie, especially between the Justice League and the Super-Pets as groups. They felt like they were all friends, not just randomly paired up.

-Script & Story of the Super-Pets Movie-

The story was pretty good, but it dragged a bit in the second act. It took a little too long for the main cast of Super-Pets to meet, but once they met, it was more engaging. I liked the origin of Lulu’s character, her arch felt like it made sense right up until the end. I especially enjoyed the scenes of the Justice League fighting together, the action was good, and the banter was fun. Ace’s story was heartbreaking and added a lot of dimension to the story. The third act didn’t make perfect sense in the way that it developed but it was fine.

-Film Quality-

I really liked the style of the animation, and I thought the backgrounds were cool, but I especially loved Merton’s character design with the glasses. The stylization of Metropolis was interesting in the way that it combined comic book inspired designs and colors while also keeping it modern and familiar.

-Representation in the Super-Pets Movie-

One other thing that I enjoyed was the diversity in the background characters. One of the featured background characters mentions that their owner is engaged, and it cuts to a gay couple, but there are background characters of all races, plus a Muslim character, and a disabled character in a wheelchair. While not perfect representation (11/19 of the main cast are white), it is better than some other movies that have come out recently!

DC League of Super-Pets Movie Discussion Questions

Themes to Discuss: Friendship, Teamwork, Love, and Relationships

1) Krypto is upset with Superman for a lot of the movie. What do you do when you don’t get along with someone?

2) Lulu is upset when Lex Luthor pushes her aside. Has someone ever taken credit for something you did? How did you deal with it?

3) Which superpower would you want the most?

4) Who was your favorite super-pet?

5) If you had a super-pet, what type of animal would they be, and what powers would they have?
