Quick Review of the Dungeons and Dragons Movie: Honor Among Thieves
While the new Dungeons and Dragons movie is not particularly unique or amazing. It is a solid action adventure comedy that does something that’s difficult to do. It appeals both to those that are fans of the game the movie is based on as well as action comedy fans that have never played it. With an all star cast, a fair amount of diversity, and a great effects budget, it really is a very fun movie. You start off by following the two main characters as they attempt a jail brake and then find out what led them there. The movie takes you on their adventure, or campaign, to save their daughter and in turn, the world.
It’s a fun action adventure comedy. Surprisingly low on the dragons and dungeons. And if you go in with low expectations and an open mind, I almost grantee you’ll find a gasp, a laugh, and enjoy the ride.

Why See Dungeons and Dragons With Your Kids
This is a great family friendly movie for families with kiddos old enough to handle the violence and peril. There are some things to consider first, like whether the adoption/fostering plotline, violence, death, or divorce would be too triggering. But in general, this is one you can safely watch together without squirming too much. If you kids are excited about, and you’re not, I would encourage you to give it a try. Not because you’ll have earth shatteringly amazing conversations out of it, but because it’s a relaxing and fun one that you can have a laugh about afterwards together. And that’s one of our favorite kinds of movies.
The Dungeons and Dragons Movie and Adoption
There are spoilers in this section!! The goal of the primary two characters is to get back to their daughter (Kira). There is a surprising amount of family drama to unpack here. The dad (Edgin) leaves, which is referred to as abandonment several times in the movie, his daughter originally to save her dead mother (Zia). So people who have experienced the death of a parental figure, or the figurative loss of one after another death might relate to this. The dad (Edgin) and mom (Holga; she is not her stepmother, but is now mom to her) end up imprisoned. People who have had a parental figure incarcerated might relate to this.
When they find Kira, she is with another father figure, Uncle Forge, who has cared for her over the past two years. In front of Kira, he is generous to Edgin and Holga, but when she leaves he declares that he will send them back to prison and that Kira is better off with him. There’s a lot of he said, she said banter about who is lying and who is telling the truth. And Kira sides with Uncle Forge the first time, Edgin the second, and then Forge puts a knife to her neck revealing that he was lying and cares more about his own interests than hers.
Forge can be seen as a selfish foster parent, or parental figure. Holga is a positive example of a stepmother who is involved and cares. Edgin is a father who makes mistakes because of a partner and loss- then recommits to parenting. And they could all be seen in other ways as well. Kira on the other hand, has a rather limited storyline. The young actress was super fabulous- but they just didn’t devote a lot of the plotline to her perspective specifically.
Kira endured trauma after trauma, and in the end she and Edgin apologize to each other and all is right in their world again without giving her room to express much of anything. So there is a LOT of room for discussion and relating to the storyline. It’s definitely not the best foster/adopt storyline, but there are still some positives and it is for sure a good thing to discuss afterwards.
Is Dungeons and Dragons Honor Among Thieves Anything Like a DND Campaign?
There are a lot of elements from the Dungeons and Dragons game that will make fans content. This was a tall task as many full campaigns can easily be 8+ hours. So, to reduce all of that to one 2ish hour movie was always going to be a bit of a task.
The heart of DND campaigns for many is the journey and character development. This movie does a good job with these two elements, while also leaving the viewer longing for a bit more of many of the characters. Overall, although some viewers may be missing the depth that the game can provide, the movie provide a fun fantasy journey that many people can enjoy.
