Quick Trolls 3 Summary

During the marriage of Bridget and King Gristle, Branch’s brother arrives to inform Branch that their other brother has been taken and needs to be saved. This leads to an adventure in which Poppy and Branch must reunite all of Branch’s brothers and create the perfect family harmony.

It’s the most predictable of the 3 movies and also the raunchiest. This one is specifically made for those parents who grew up with boy bands. A lot of the jokes and inuendo will fly right over the kids heads. And it was a FUN movie. The animation was beautiful and the music was fun but I wouldn’t want to watch it with my grandma.

Trolls 3 Review

Why Watch Trolls 3-

If you loved N-Sync and boy bands in general- this whole movie is for you. It’s a fun addition to the Trolls universe that brings the Bergins back in. It’s pretty, fun, and fast paced. There are a lot of good reasons to watch the movie, but is Trolls 3 appropriate? Short answer- not really but hopefully most of the references won’t be caught by kids and will just entertain the adults watching it too.

-Is Trolls 3 Appropriate?-

There are quite a lot of inappropriate references in this movie (more than other Trolls movies). With that said, they are mostly just verbal and will mostly go over kids’ heads. The subplot of Bridget and King Gristle’s marriage leads to a lot of jokes revolving around their honeymoon. I think the most inappropriate is an allusion to being tied up. The other subplot revolves around Tiny Diamond’s “Paci” which is a clear reference to drugs. Again, a lot of these will go over younger viewers heads, but they are definitely there.

The overall plot revolves around being abandoned and finding long lost family. This deserves it own section, so I’ll talk about it more in the next section.

Lastly, there are a few references to the word hell. At first it transitions to the word hello, but the second time it does not, but it is done within song lyrics and most kids may not even notice it. If you kids can handle the other Trolls movies, this is a fun movie for the family but I wouldn’t call it appropriate or want it on repeat at home with pre-schoolers.

Family Dynamic in Trolls 3

Let’s talk about the weird family dynamics in Trolls Band Together. If this is a possible trigger for you or your kiddo- this section is for you. Spoilers ahead. Abusive family dynamics abound in this movie. We’ll start with Branch, whose brothers have not all talked or been together in over a decade after a big fight. There’s very little consequences to this or accountability taken and it all magically works out for them. They disown each other a lot during the movie.

Then we have the villains. Who are manipulative and cruel. There’s a great line from one of the Trolls to a villain about not needing to let someone be mean to you just because they are related to you. This is a really good discussion point. But they’re awful to others and each other and are the only ones that face consequences.

Then there’s Poppy. Who never knew she had a sister. And meeting her long lost sister goes EXACTLY like the fantasies she’s had about meeting her. Except her sister is too afraid to step outside her front door, and Poppy is not. So Poppy leaves her sister again, for a little while, to help Branch. The sisters eventually work together, hang out with their dad, and become instant best friends. With zero consequences for them or the parent that hid their existence.

There is a sweet line where Poppy reassures Bridget that she is her sister too. That’s another good discussion point.

Overall Trolls 3 could be a really triggering and dysregulating watch for kiddos with different family dynamics or who have experienced foster care or adoption. My littles did not really pick up on the weirdness of that storyline. And while we might play the soundtrack, we probably will not ever watch this one at home- unless we have a big conversation afterwards.
