Know Before You Watch The Sound of Freedom Movie

Name: Sound of Freedom
Rating: PG-13
Age Suggestion: 13 and up
Running Time: 2 hrs. 11 mins.
Release Date: July 4th, 2023
Where to Stream: Currently in theaters, but will likely stream on the Angel studios app
Warnings: This movie deals heavily with human sex trafficking, specifically with children. No sex or nudity is shown, but the terror of the children is seen beforehand. There are a few curse words. The overall tone of the movie is very heavy with sadness.

**Disclaimer** We were disappointed that this movie and its organizers did not provide any action steps beyond ‘go see this movie’. We do not agree with the political beliefs of the creators of this movie, but we do agree on the need and desire to help and protect children. The message of this movie is important and the plot of this movie stays away from the US politics portion of the story. The online discourse and interviews have not. (Why bring this up? Because politics are part of what’s needed to fight trafficking) We want to emphasize the importance of listening and learning from a variety of sources who are currently working to protect children and end trafficking both in the US and in other nations. Resources are listed in this article**

Quick Sound of Freedom Movie Summary

Sound of Freedom tells the story of two siblings, Rocio and Miguel, who were taken from their father and put into the trafficking system. Tim Ballard, a homeland security officer, has been catching pedophiles for many years. When he helps save a boy from sex trafficking, he is drawn into the world of rescuing children rather than just stopping pedophiles. The majority of the movie involves Tim attempting to find and save Rocio.

The Chosen Discussion Questions

Sound of Freedom Movie Review

Sound of Freedom does a good job at telling a compelling story while also shining a light on an important topic. Jim Caviezel and the rest of the cast give very compelling performances. A special shout out to the kid actors and actresses for tackling such a heavy issue and doing such a wonderful job.

The overall plot does run a bit slow and the overall run time could have probably been cut down a bit. Nevertheless, the story starts with an emotional crescendo that pays off at the end.

Besides the lack of diversity, my main issue with the movie is that it brings up this important issue without talking about any action steps. Except for asking more people to go see the movie. That was really problematic for us, there are not even suggestions listed on the website. That’s why I made a list below of ways to start to help stop human trafficking.

Sound of Freedom Movie Quotes

You’re the man who saves children, right?

Could you sleep at night knowing one of your children’s beds is empty?

This job tears you to pieces and this is my one chance to put these pieces back together.

He buys children and then he sets them free.

Why are you doing it?
Because God’s children are not for sale.

So, you quit your job and you go and rescue these kids.

If we do nothing, their pain is going to spread and spread.

Millions of these slaves are children.

You hear that? That’s the sound of freedom.

How to Stop Kid (and Human) Trafficking

The whole plot of Sound of Freedom revolves around saving and helping kids who have been trafficked. With that said, it was extremely disappointing that no resources were listed or offered in connection with the movie.. If you are wanting to take steps to get involved, we have put together a list of ways to consider giving.

Prevent Trafficking Kids

Be Prepared

-Save the National Human Trafficking Hotline into your phone (888-373-7888)

-Complete the BLI (Blue Lightning Initiative) Training which teaches the basics of human trafficking and what to do if spotted.

The Problem is National, not just International

One thing that someone who has only watched Sound of Freedom may be guilty of thinking is that the kids who are put in these situations are only international children. This is simply not the case. The actual number is hard to nail down, but according to Deliver Fund, it ranges between 15-50 thousand children and women.

As a foster parent I want to point out that kids who experience foster care in the United States are one of the most likely groups to be targeted for human trafficking. Supporting foster children and families in poverty is absolutely key in preventing and stopping trafficking.
