Unsung Hero is a sweet tribute film to the Smallbone parents and to the rise of their families fame in the Contemporary Christian Music scene. Is Unsung Hero based on a true story? Yes, but it is not a documentary. At the end of the movie, they do give a little update on where each of the family members are now. Building off of that, here is some more information of the family members and some of the bands and industry people who were mentioned.

Where are they now Unsung Hero Family Members:

Mom: Helen Smallbone

At the end of the movie we saw a video of Helen at one of her children’s concerts. Enjoying the music with her husband, David. She has been interviewed for a couple of podcasts about the movie. Helen gets to enjoy the legacy she has built with her family through her children’s music and her grandchildren.

Dad: David Smallbone-

At the end of the movie, we saw videos of David and his kids on the road for tours and concerts. David Smallbone continued to work as a manager and concert promotor. He was able to assist his children with their careers and travel with them. David gets to enjoy the legacy he has built with his family and enjoy his grandchildren.

Rebecca St. James: Rebecca Smallbone

Rebecca won multiple awards for her music and still has a prolific career in the contemporary Christian industry. She still releases music but is also an actress, author and podcast host with Focus on the Family. She is married to Cubbie Fink who is also a musical artist (known for the band Foster the People). They have young children of their own. She shares her music, podcasts, family and homeschooling updates on Instagram here.

Ben Smallbone-

Ben Smallbone was shown behind the camera a lot during the movie and that is the career direction he chose. Not only filming or editing his brother’s music videos but also working on theatrical and streaming directing and editing. Currently an award winning film director according to the end of the movie. You can check out his IMBD page here. Ben is now married and has small children of his own. Keep up with his work and occasional family posts on Instagram here.

Josh Smallbone-

Josh has stuck to the business management side of the family business. According to his Linked In Josh has been managing the business related to For King and Country for the past 8 years. Specifically managing Smallbone Entertainment, you can find more about that here. I could not find any public social media profiles or interviews.

Daniel Smallbone-

Daniel was shown at the end of the movie as a lighting specialist for not only his siblings (Who have pretty amazing concert light set ups!) but also for other artists. His design company is called Lumina Design. You can check out their Instagram page here.

Libby Smallbone-

Libby is the youngest sibling in the Smallbone family. Her birth and first year are fictionally documented in the movie Unsung Hero. Libby has worked as a musical artist, an actress, a makeup artist, and an entertainment manager. She posts a lot about life on a farm with her animals and about her work on Instagram.

Luke Smallbone-

Luke has been singing since childhood, as we see in the movie. He and his brother Joel have a band called For King and Country. More information about the band can be found in the next section. Luke battled a severe digestive disease that he is now in remission for. His infant son needed a skull surgery just a couple of years later. Luke is married to Courtney, who shares a lot of their life living on a farm on Instagram. Luke is not as active on Instagram but does share work and some family updates. They now have four children.

Joel Smallbone-

Joel has been singing with his siblings since he was young. After years of trying different ideas with his brother, they formed the band For King and Country. More information about the band can be found in the next section. Joel is married to musical artist and actress Moriah Smallbone (Peters). Joel helped to write the script for the film, starred in it, and directed Unsung Hero. He is active on Instagram.

Where are they now Unsung Hero Bands and Industry People:

Jon Mohr

Thanks to the Unsung Hero podcast from Access More – find them here– I learned that Jed Albright was a character inspired by Jon Mohr. His family did gift a vehicle to the family and help them out financially, and was later helped out by the Smallbone family. He is currently working as a voice actor but has worked as a songwriter. Jon Mohr was a part of the Gaither Vocal Band. He was an international missionary. As a voice actor he has recorded the CSB version of the Bible. Check out his website here.

Stryper

Stryper took a decade off from 1993-2003 with a few reunions within that timeframe. Since 2003, they have been going strong and are currently slated to have a new album drop later in 2024. You can find out more on their website here.

Amy Grant

Amy Grant is currently touring. You can find info about the tours, her current musical releases, and remastered tracks and videos here on her website. Amy Grant has blazed a trail that reminds me of how much of an industrial machine evangelicalism and the CCM category are. She impressively moved into the pop sphere after being rejected from the CCM one and yet she is one of the most well known CCM (Christian Contemporary Music) artists of all time. Personally, my parents first date was at an Amy Grant concert and the whole family still enjoys listening to her impressive catalog of music.

Carmen

The musical artist Carmen doesn’t come off very well in the movie. But I think the point was to emphasize that it’s an industry and business. Rebecca St. James opened for Carmen’s successful Australian tour as a young teen. Carmen continued in the world of music with over twenty albums from 1980 to 2017. He dealt with various severe illness for the last decade of his life and passed away from complications following surgery in February 2021.

DeGarmo and Key

DeGarmo and Key remained an active band until Dana Key sadly passed away in 2010 from a ruptured blood clot. Eddie DeGarmo served as the president of Capitol CMG Publishing, the largest Christian Music publisher in the world. He released his book, Rebel for God: Faith, Business, and Rock ‘n’ Roll in 2018.

For King and Country

Joel and Luke Smallbone worked for years before their breakout success as For King and Country in 2009, with a Bilboard topping song in 2011. The duo have made several videos and recorded with many other musical artists, inside and and outside of the CCM genre. They are still recording and touring. Their website is updated with all of their tour, social media, movie and music updates. Find more here.
