The Chosen is a show made to entertain and point the viewer to scripture. It is not a literal interpretation of scripture, should not be viewed as the Bible, and does not claim to be Biblically accurate in it’s portrayal of new testament events. It’s an entertaining show, but not a replacement for reading and working to interpret the Bible.

This is an ancient Middle Eastern story being told through a more modern Western perspective. (Even though they do make great efforts to ensure the aesthetic of historical accuracy). For more on this, check out the book ‘Jesus Through Middle Eastern Eyes‘. As the series has evolved and gained more financial backing, it has become more about what could have been and an entertaining story. We enjoy it, but that does not mean it is for everyone, or that it is accurate. We still think it is a great study resource. We would argue that you can find a lot of Bible lessons in much less Bible focused shows and movies, this one points you directly to the Bible.

The Chosen Season 4 Trailer

The Chosen Season 4 Summary

At time of writing, episodes 1-6 have been released. There are quite a few plates that are already spinning and a few already crashing to the ground. The relationships within the apostles are especially highlighted this season as we see signs of love, jealousy, forgiveness, and both misunderstanding with understanding. And there is a dark cloud surrounding the show now as we get closer to the inevitable arrest of Jesus.

The Chosen Season 4 Review (No Major Spoilers)

Episodes 1-3 are kicking off this season with a big push. The relationship between Jesus and the apostles are still good, but you can see the fraying effect it is having on Jesus. Jesus’ consistent experience of not being understood is painful. Grief and the threat of death and pain are explored in new ways.

Episodes 4-6 deal with the fallout of unexpected pain. Also with the religious and ruling leaders starting to focus on the power and influence of Jesus and the disciples. We see the majority of religious people reject Jesus. And the disciples face deep questions and insecurities. As a grieving parent myself, I appreciated how the show handled loss more in these episodes than in any of the previous ones. Several episodes last season were very triggering and I felt handled loss poorly. Whereas in scripture we see grief as being a monumental event in people’s daily lives, they handled mourning better societally than we do now.

Episodes 7-8 coming soon.

The Chosen Season 4 Discussion Questions and Bible Study

Episode 1

Summary for Episode 1 of The Chosen Season 4

The Chosen season 4 jumps straight into the plot as we start with the announcement of Elizabeth’s pregnancy of John. This episode’s primary plot revolves around John the Baptist and goes back and forth in time between his birth and dedication to the time of his execution. Alongside this, the apostles are continuing to grow their business and relationships continue to be built.

The Chosen Season 4 Discussion Questions for Episode 1

Themes for Discussion: Loss of a friend, Desire for efficiency over ministry, God’s provision

  1. The emotional crux of this episode was the story of John the Baptist. Is there any new information that you gleaned from this story that you hadn’t noticed before? What did you think of scenes that bounced back and forth between the birth and death of John the Baptist?
  2. Why was Herodias holding such a grudge against John the Baptist? (Matthew 14 can give a bit more context here if it was missed)
  3. What is Judas’ issue with the current state of Jesus’ mission? Would you be having similar thoughts or would you be more okay going with the mission? How do you see Judas’ thoughts here in effect in today’s culture?
  4. During the conversation doing laundry, Judas brings up the idea of need to change his inner instincts. How was this metaphor shown through the laundering process? What would this look like in your life?

Episode 2

Summary for Episode 2 of The Chosen Season 4

Episode 2 picks up with the grief of episode 1 as Jesus and the apostles are dealing with the loss of their friend. The group is observing Shiva for John, but this leads them to places that they wouldn’t have expected. As Jesus decides that to truly honor John’s life, he needs to take Shiva to the open road. This episode also greatly focuses on the relationship between Simon (who is bestowed his new name, Peter, in this episode) and Matthew.

The Chosen Season 4 Discussion Questions for Episode 2

Themes for Discussion: Grief, Forgiveness, Repentance, Fighting for love

  1. Jesus turns the process of Shiva on its head to better honor John the Baptist. How did this change truly honor John? Have you ever performed any similar ceremonies for people in your life?
  2. We tend to think of the apostles as superhuman. How does seeing the apostles as human help us better understand our religious leaders?
  3. “People seem to think they know why I’m here.” What leads Jesus to make this statement and how do we see this affecting Jesus?
  4. Matthew comes to Jesus to discuss why Peter needs to forgive him, but Jesus turns this idea on its head. What can we learn about forgiveness and repentance from this scene and overall plot?

Bible Study Passages for The Chosen Season 4 Episode 2

Mark 8:27-30: The discussion of who Jesus is
Matthew 18:21-22: How many times must I forgive my brother?
Mark 9:33-35: Who is the greatest (Likely to come up again in future episodes)

Episode 3

Summary for Episode 3 of The Chosen Season 4

Episode 3 starts of by jumping back to the story of David and Bathsheba as their baby dies. This continues the theme of grieving and prepares us for what is to come. The Sanhedrin and the Roman magistrate, Quintus, are becoming more riled up and set on ending the ministry of Jesus before it grows too big to squash. And the episode ends with the death of a beloved character.

The Chosen Season 4 Discussion Questions for Episode 3

Themes to Discuss: A desire to be important, Jesus healing others

  1. The episode opens on the tragedy of David and Bathsheba. How does this fit into the themes and story occurring in season 4? (Be sensitive to those who might have experienced infant loss or recent loss in your group please)
  2. What is causing Quintus to want the end of Jesus’ ministry?
  3. The Pharisees are using the facade of tradition to push back against Jesus. What is their true motivation?
  4. Episode 3 ends on an absolute gut punch. How do you think this will affect the apostles?

Episode 4

Summary for Episode 4 of The Chosen Season 4

Gaius is given the position of praetor unexpectedly. The disciples, especially Thomas, deal with the loss of Ramah. We see Jesus teach gentiles, Jewish people, Pharisees and Roman soldiers. Jesus performs a miracle and is encouraged by the faith of a Roman officer. And personally, as a grieving parent, I appreciated how they dealt with loss in this episode. This quote is wonderful…” Maybe don’t do anything at all… Simply be with him rather than being the rock…. Even if you don’t know what to say just be there.”

The Chosen Season 4 Discussion Questions for Episode 4

  1. How did the loss of Ramah impact everyone? Were you surprised by the reaction of her father? (Please be sensitive to those in your discussion group who might have experienced recent loss)
  2. “I trust in the God who walks on water.” Gaius’ faith is a big plot point of this episode. He believes in the power of God so strongly, more than several of the disciples in that moment. We see that even on his way home, as he buys celebratory things before he has seen the miracle with his own eyes. What did you think of that?
  3. I loved the image of Jesus teaching a crowd that included people from so many various walks of life. Especially alongside the images from the next episode’s angst and anger from different people of the same groups. Both citizens, Roman soldiers, gentiles, people of Jewish faith, and religious leaders were all engaged with the teaching of Jesus and angered by it. How do we include or exclude people in our faith practices?

Bible Study Passages for The Chosen Season 4 Episode 4

John 4: 43-54 Healing an officials son from afar ( could be what the healing plotline of this episode was loosely based on)
Deuteronomy 34 Israel mourns the loss of Moses
Isaiah 55: 6-13 God’s thoughts are not our thoughts
Romans 12 Being a living sacrifice and mourning with those who mourn

Episode 5

Summary for Episode 5 of The Chosen Season 4

Religious leaders from various sects are starting to be more aware of the influence of Jesus. We see Sadducees and Pharisees debating the meaning of eternal and different scriptures. Then hear about the large disagreements between the leading religious groups in the area- Sadducees, Pharisees, Zealots, Hellenistic Jews and more. Jesus teaches a practical, hands on lesson, in humility and service.

Mary, Martha, and Lazarus are introduced, learn more about them here from Marg Mowczko. Mary is encouraged for learning and taking an active role in ministry when it is not the same path that her sister, Martha, asks of her. (I wish that scene had been handled differently but still liked the introduction to those characters. And I hope that Martha’s faith is better exemplified in future episodes.) Yussif is disillusioned by the petty politics and rigid ways of the gathering of the religious and political elite.

The Chosen Season 4 Discussion Questions for Episode 5

  1. What were your thoughts on the group carrying the equipment of the Roman soldiers?
  2. “Throughout history men have called the time they live in troubled times. I suppose ours is no different.” We see religious leaders, political leaders, and citizens like Ramah’s father gather and lead people with fear and anger. How is Jesus different?
  3. The parable of the laborers that are all paid the same brings questions of whether or not the kingdom of God is just. What does just and fair mean to you? How do you view the kingdom of God from that perspective?
  4. Jesus talks with his mother in this episode about how even his closest friends and followers do not understand the message. The disciples here again that Jesus wants them to listen and learn more than defend him. How has your understanding of the messages of Jesus changed and evolved over time?

Bible Study Passages for The Chosen Season 4 Episode 5

Matthew 5: 38-48 Love for enemies, go two miles
Matthew 20 The parable of the workers in the vineyard, Jesus heals 2 blind men, the Zebedee’s request
Luke 10: 38-42 Mary and Martha’s house

Episode 6

Summary for Episode 6 of The Chosen Season 4

The group celebrates Hanukkah in an inn together outside of Jerusalem. Learn more about Hanukkah from this history.com article. A plot is discovered and brought to the attention of the disciples. The group faces another physical and verbal confrontation.

The Chosen Season 4 Discussion Questions for Episode 6

  1. We kept seeing the disciples recite memorized scripture together. There are so many benefits to memorizing scripture, and of speaking it out loud together. What passage can you work on memorizing? Is there a place where you hear people read scripture out loud together?
  2. Peter has been helpful to Thomas, but Thomas tells him to stop throwing scraps of scripture at him. And asks if that actually helped Peter or Eden. Scripture is often taken out of context and sometimes used as a tool to make people feel the way we want them to feel. Whether that’s encouraged, convicted, comforted, or subservient. Peter’s presence was more helpful than his words. How can you support someone this week with your time or presence?
  3. Why are the disciples so hesitant to ask Jesus for things? How do you feel about asking questions of or to God?
  4. “He’s the Messiah! ‘Not the one they’re looking for apparently.'” Which version of Jesus are you searching for?

Bible Study Passages for The Chosen Season 4 Episode 6

Psalm 118 It is better to take refuge in the Lord
-John 10 Jesus is the good shepherd, preaching to the Pharisees, attempted stoning and arrest
-Romans 15: 1-13 Importance of scripture, unity, serving gentiles

Episode 7

The best time for a bathroom break in The Chosen season 4 episode 7 is when Jesus sits down with Lazarus to discuss what just happens. Or in between episode 7 and 8.

How long is the Chosen season 4 episode 7 and 8 in theaters? There is about twenty minutes of intro stuff, the episodes together are about two hours.

Summary for Episode 7 of The Chosen Season 4

(To be expanded on digital release) Mary and James discuss expectations. Jesus and the disciples head back to the funeral of Lazarus. Jesus is frustrated with his disciples lack of understanding. The largest miracle Jesus performs is completed. We see some symmetry and foreshadowing with the stone being rolled away from the tomb.

This episode had some interesting takes on several important moments in Scripture. And while we did not agree with them all, we still enjoyed watching their interpretation. It certainly gives you a lot to discuss.

The Chosen Season 4 Discussion Questions for Episode 7

(To be reevaluated on digital release)

  1. Jesus weeping and mourning did not look like how I had always thought of it in my head. What were your thoughts on that scene?
  2. How does the show present the resurrection of Lazarus impacting people’s belief?
  3. This season especially has dealt a lot with theodicy, or how we justify suffering and pain with a good, all powerful, God. And while we do not see Biblical evidence of Jesus choosing to help some people and not others, it is still a good question to ask. The way this episode in particular leaned seemed to come from a Calvinistic bent that everything happens for, and according to, God’s plan. How do you deal with the problem of pain and evil in the world with a just, all powerful, God? (This discussion can be sensitive and difficult. Handle with grace and care)

Bible Study Passages for The Chosen Season 4 Episode 7

(To be expanded on digital release)
John 11 Jesus talking to the disciples and the sisters of Lazarus, the resurrection, and the reaction after the resurrection.

Episode 8

Summary for Episode 8 of The Chosen Season 4

(To be expanded on digital release) The episode opens with more foreshadowing with King David riding in on a donkey with shouts of praise and palm leaves waving. We see many people making the trip to Jerusalem for the Passover celebration in eager anticipation of seeing Jesus.

The Chosen Season 4 Discussion Questions for Episode 8

(To be expanded on digital release)

  1. The religious leaders cannot agree or decide on who Jesus is or if He is a false prophet. But the disciples cannot agree on much either in this episode. What are the similarities and differences in how the disciples act vs. the motivation and actions of the religious leaders? Why can’t anyone agree or get along?
  2. Opinions are very mixed on what people were expecting of Jesus as a messiah. What are your expectations of Jesus and His reign?
  3. Did you expect for the storyline to move along so quickly? I’m surprised that it seems to be moving so quickly towards the death and resurrection of Jesus.
  4. Do you believe in leaving room for unanswered questions in your faith practice? How do you handle asking questions?
Here is a book resource that we like for when Scripture is confusing.

Bible Study Passages for The Chosen Season 4 Episode 8

(To be expanded on digital release)

2 Samuel 10 King David is victorious
Exodus 12:1-30 The Passover and the lamb
Matthew 25: 31-46 I was hungry and you fed me
