Know Before You Watch The Chosen Season 5
Show Name: The Chosen Season 5 (Check out Season 1, Season 2, Season 3 and Season 4 here)
Rating: TV-PG
Age Suggestion: 10 and up
Episode Length: ~50 minutes per episode (8 episodes in this season)
Where to Watch: Season 5 is now streaming on Amazon. You can also find Seasons 1-4 on Amazon Prime Video!
Warnings: This season deals with the impending death of Jesus and the heaviness that those conversations carry
The Chosen is a show made to entertain and point the viewer to scripture. It is not a literal interpretation of scripture, should not be viewed as the Bible, and does not claim to be Biblically accurate in it’s portrayal of new testament events. It’s an entertaining show, but not a replacement for reading and working to interpret the Bible.
This is an ancient Middle Eastern story being told through a more modern Western perspective. (Even though they do make great efforts to ensure the aesthetic of historical accuracy). For more on this, check out the book ‘Jesus Through Middle Eastern Eyes‘. As the series has evolved and gained more financial backing, it has become more about what could have been and an entertaining story. We enjoy it, but that does not mean it is for everyone, or that it is accurate. We still think it is a great study resource. We would argue that you can find a lot of Bible lessons in much less Bible focused shows and movies, this one points you directly to the Bible.
When will the Chosen Season 5 Be Released?
The first 4 seasons of The Chosen are now streaming on Amazon Prime Video! Season 5 has started streaming. All of the episodes will be on Amazon by June 29th, 2025.

The Chosen Season 5 Discussion Guide and Bible Study
Episode 1 – Entry
Summary for Episode 1 of The Chosen Season 5
The Chosen season 5 begins with Jesus and the disciples having a conversation about Jesus’ final days on earth (The Last Supper). After a brief conversation, the episode then jumps four days prior and shows people preparing for Palm Sunday and Jesus coming on a donkey. There is a quite a bit of behind the crowd’s conversations between Pharisees and leaders regarding the threat of Jesus and his followers. Near the end of the episode, Jesus begins to feel the weight of what is to come and begins to grieve this (with most likely much more to come).

- Jesus begins to feel his soul stir over his upcoming death. What are ways that you have experienced this feeling in your life? How is it similar or different than what Jesus is experiencing here?
- Later in the episode, Jesus is seen celebrating at a wedding. This scene was not necessarily in the Bible, but still played a significant role in this episode. What was the importance of this scene to the story and also to Jesus’ perspective?

Episode 2 – House of Cards
Summary for Episode 2 of The Chosen Season 5
Episode 2 picks up the continuation of the last supper, which will likely be a recurring theme of each episode. This session discusses the confusion of the apostles on why Jesus has to leave. Then again, we jump back in time to fill out some more back story of Kafni, Ramah, and Thomas. Later in the episode, Thomas is confronted by Kafni which causes him to break down in grief. Much of the episode goes between the tax collectors, Caiaphas, and the apostles. The climax of the episode is Jesus turning over the temple in anger and ends with Judas silently saying, “What have you done?”
The Chosen Season 5 Discussion Guide for Episode 2
Themes for Discussion: Dealing with grief and guilt, Righteous Anger,
- Jesus begins to get pushback of the apostles not understanding why He has to go. Do you think you would have struggled to understand or would have accepted it quickly? What makes you think this?
- Peter struggled to give a sermon in the way that Jesus did. Later (in the Bible), we see Peter as a great speaker and leader. What lessons can you take from this in your own life?
- Thomas is quickly attacked by grief after his interaction with Kafni and Naomi. Have you experienced this kind of sudden, deep grief. How have you handled it in your life? (This can be a heavy question depending on the life experience of your group, so tread gently and lightly).
- Jesus clearing out the temple is an often misunderstood piece of scripture. What led Jesus to clear out the temple? How is that similar and dissimilar to how modern day Christians use this scripture?
Bible Study Passages for The Chosen Season 5 Episode 2

–Mark 11:15-19: Jesus clears out the temple
Episode 3 – Woes

There is some conversation back and forth, then cuts to the aftermath of the prior episode. The fallout of Jesus clearing the temple is at full swing, causing lots of discussion with every character processing Jesus’ actions. Most of this episode deal with this fallout and the disciples beginning to come to terms with the impending loss of Jesus.

Episode 4 – The Same Coin
Summary for Episode 4 of The Chosen Season 5
Episode 4 begins with the Passover Seder, where they tell the story of Moses through Dayenu (…It would have been enough) and then turns to Jesus’ nearing betrayal and death. Jesus begins to have a lot of more specific conversations with the disciples, both as a group and individuals. The opposition of Jesus gets closer and closer to pushing the “arrest Jesus” button, but that mainly is just simmering here. The episode ends with Jesus and several of the women of his ministry doing their own Dayenu in perhaps one of the most emotional poignant moments of this season so far.
The Chosen Season 5 Discussion Guide for Episode 4
Themes for Discussion: Vulnerability, Gratitude, Trust in God, the Holy Spirit
- Discuss the Passover Seder. Has anyone ever taken part of one before? If so, what was that like?
- Jesus and Judas have a conversation about Judas’ upcoming betrayal. What was the conflict that pushed Judas away from Jesus? How do you feel this episode handled this interaction?
- Judas states “If I am no use in your kingdom, then I am nothing.” Have you ever had this mentality in your Christianity or with your church?
- If the group is comfortable enough with each other, think about holding your own Dayenu. This can be as intense or gentle as needed for your group. In general, you say a statement of something Jesus/God has done for you (in this phrasing of, “even if He had only…”) and end it with “It would have been enough.” This could be particularly vulnerable for some.

On both the Pharisee’s and Disciple’s sides, the intensity of discussion regarding the arrest of Jesus greatly intensify. Near the end of the episode, Mary is taken by a rabbi to reunite with Nicodemus while Judas goes to the house of Caiaphas. This was very much a building episode that very much was carried by the atmosphere of the impending arrest.

- The Disciples begin with some of the same old arguments they have been having for quite some time. How have they changed and what other ways have they remained the same throughout the series?
- Jesus clarifies the meaning of the cursing of the fig tree in this episode? What was the true meaning? What lessons can we learn for today’s time?
- This episode begins to really hit at the topic of Living Grief, the grief that can happen prior to a persons death or absence. How does this appear in this episode? Have you ever experienced this personally?

Episode 8 – The Upper Room Pt 2
Summary for Episode 8 of The Chosen Season 5
Unlike all the other episodes, this episode does not begin on the time of the Last Supper. Instead, we have one more disciple flashback and we see Thaddaeus’ journey to the Last Supper as he ruminates upon meeting Jesus. The episode heavily focuses on the moments right before his arrest, with a heavy emphasis on Gethsemane. The political happenings behind the scenes also get some screen time as things finally begin to fall in place for the arrest of Jesus. The episode ends with Judas kissing Jesus on the cheek, sealing his arrest for the beginning of season six!
The Chosen Season 5 Discussion Guide for Episode 8
Themes for Discussion: Grief, Anger, Pride, Disappointment,
- Now that the season is over, read through the Last Supper (Matthew 26:17-30). How did this season do at presenting this section of scripture?
- In Gethsemane, Jesus shows how he is in deep mourning. How do the disciples respond to this? Are there times in your life that you have felt this way (either perspective)?
- While praying in Gethsemane, Jesus is comforted by a vision of Joseph. Has there been a time in your life that the spirit of a loved one or the Holy Spirit has inexplicably comforted you?
- Go through the story of Judas throughout the Bible and this show. How did he end up at the point where he was willing to betray Jesus?
- This is the final episode. Think back on your favorite moments of season 5. Which parts were the most emotional and impactful? What do you think could have possibly been presented better? You can also spend some time thinking through what the next two seasons hold.
