Unbelievable Book Review: (Contains some spoilers)
Justin Brierley takes the arguments he has heard and groups them into categories that will be familiar to those with a background in apologetics. Most books on apologetics present their arguments in a very rational fashion. What makes this book so unique is that it goes beyond this. It is, instead, a series of stories taken from the shows. These are frequently fascinating and put a human face on both sides of the questions.
Some of the broad categories covered include the questions of human existence, human value, and human purpose. All are covered well.
–Why Read the Unbelievable Book–
This is a very readable book, much more so than many similar books on Christian apologetics. One of the chief values in the approach taken by Brierley is that he humanizes the questions. All too often we get to hear only one side of the questions that are asked in this book. Read it so that, as the title suggests, you can talk to non-Christians, truly listen to them, and be able to clearly know and discuss why Christianity is still the best option.
Unbelievable Book Discussion Questions
1. Brierley presents several reasons that he believes “God is the best explanation for both the universe and us”. Looking at what he presents in chapter 2, do you agree with him? What questions do you have?
2. In the next chapter (God makes sense of human value), Brierley covers the “moral argument.” This argument states God is the best explanation for human worth and dignity. This may be something you have not considered. Do you agree that atheists, although they may live moral lives, cannot provide a good explanation for living this type of life? Make sure you consider the common objections atheists have given to him on the show.
3. Most atheists would agree that, in their view, there is no ultimate purpose in life. How does having meaning (or not having meaning) affect how you view life?
4. The next two chapters (Will the real Jesus please stand up and Facts that only fit the resurrection) concern Jesus. The first deals with misconceptions of Jesus, the second His resurrection. Had you heard of the minimal facts? Do you agree that they are persuasive?
5. Why is the question of human suffering so hard for Christians?
7. Which chapter made you think the most and why?
8. Were there ideas in the book that you had not known about before? Or had you heard most of them from others? How does knowing about this help strengthen your own faith?
Final Thoughts on Unbelievable
The podcast and book are both really engaging and interesting. They provide really great opportunities for open questions and some deep discussion. It would be a great starting point for some deep conversations with older teens.
