Investi-Gators: Heist and Seek Review
Why Read Investi-Gators: Heist and Seek
This is our first review of a book in the Investi-gators series. These are graphic novels that do a humorous take on the spy/ adventure thriller genre. The reviews consistently say that kids love these books. Most of the humor is aimed at kids, but there is some that adults will appreciate. We have all of the things that kids will laugh over – such as the team travels through the sewer system and frequently flush themselves down the nearest toilet. We have some new silly acronyms (one of the running ones is that they wear VEST’s – Very Exciting Spy Technology).
There are plays on words (purpose and porpoise as an example). In this outing, Green is looking to help kids develop an appreciation for art. And that art can be anything from a famous painting to drawing a graphic novel or comic book. He wants them, (and their parents) to understand art takes many forms, and what you see, for instance, in a graphic novel takes a great deal of work and needs to be recognized.
Is Investi-Gators: Heist and Seek Appropriate?
The Invest-Gators series in general is quite kid friendly. There is a fair amount of potty humor, but nothing overtly inappropriate. One of the best parts of the Investi-Gators series is the consistent flow of very clever jokes meant for parents/adults. This is shown well in this quote, “Perfect! We’re on the last step to solve this case and we’re not even halfway through the book!” This book, and the whole series, is a great book to read together or on your own.
Investi-Gators: Heist and Seek Discussion Questions
- Have you ever been to an art museum? Or any other type of museum? What did you think?
- Have you ever tried to paint or do other types of art? How many kinds of art does the book talk about?
- What was the funniest thing that happened in this book?
- When the characters talk directly to you instead of to each other, it is called breaking the 4th wall. What do you think about this in books? You might want to look up how that term got its name.
- Were you able to guess who the thief was? Or did you think it was someone else? One of the best things about books like this is that you get to see if you can figure out the clues.
