A Child’s Heart

A Child’s Heart: Theology Thursday Poem by the Elf and the Ent

A Child’s Heart

Watch me take this big leap!
Are you watching, are you clapping?
I heard you say that step was steep,
I tried to catch myself, arms flapping
But I fell and scraped my knee
Hold me longer, wipe my tears?
I’m scared but I want to climb this tree
Can you help me work through my fears?

The world is large and overwhelming
But I love exploring with you and finding things
My heart and mind are always swelling
I’m ready to turn these little arms into wings
I can’t explain why I’m crying just now
You say use my words and talk to you
I’m trying to but I don’t know how
So, you hold me and see me through
You said learn to walk before you run,

My knees are shaky but I know I can do it
And I’m just having so much fun
There’s too much on my mind to quit
You say it’s time to rest my dear
But I just want one more minute to run
If I keep going will you still be near?
I can’t slow down just as the day is done

Pause, listen to the lullaby you sing your little one
Rest in my arms while she rests in yours, child
I love you too, even when you feel overrun
Remember, I’m cheering you on, you make me smile
You are so much like that child you chase
Stubborn and wild but loved and adored
Remember to slow down, search for my face
And never forget, it was you I died for
