She and her friends band together to save the world and they learn a lot about themselves in the process.
Ms Marvel Review
Ms. Marvel is a fantastic installment in the MCU. It fits the tv show format way better than a lot of the other MCU Disney+ shows. It is the perfect blend of coming of age and superhero story. This series left me adoring Kamala Khan! The tone of the show makes it more appropriate for younger viewers, as opposed to Dr. Strange and the Multiverse of Madness or Moon Knight. If you enjoy lighthearted comedies with a unique twist, I’d highly recommend it, especially for pre-teens and young teens.
Iman Vellani who plays Kamala has such a fun energy but handles the serious moments well and brings a lot of depth to the character. The supporting cast is incredible as well. Matt Lintz as Bruno and Rish Shah as Kamran both have a great dynamic together and individually with Iman. I also loved Yasmeen Fletcher as Nakia and Laurel Marsden as Zoe, though I wish both had more screentime. Kamala’s family were the standout of the show for me. Zenobia Shroff as Kamala’s mother Muneeba was amazing. Every scene with her and Kamala was so well written and their dynamic together made me emotional.
The Ms Marvel Discussion: Show and Comic
One of the things that both impressed me and disappointed me with this show was the writing. The show was great at developing these characters and making you feel for them, but it wasn’t as great with following a consistent plot. I felt that the show would have benefited from having two more episodes to fully develop the plot lines, and bring them all the way to fruition, as opposed to having the plots feel disjointed at times. Though the writing wasn’t consistently good, the character work made me love this show, and I’m excited to rewatch it again.
The show also has a strong style, especially in the first episode. It is bright and colorful, and very comic book inspired. One of my favorite stylistic things they do is with texting. Frequently, they use practical effects to show you what the characters are texting to each other, and it looks so cool! I also love the inclusion of South Asian culture that makes the show feel more authentic to who Kamala is and her background.
Although Ms Marvel has different powers than she does in the graphic novels, her powers are really unique. It is fun to see her accidentally run into them and learn to use and harness them more throughout the film. Even with how much she improved, it still feels like there is more to her abilities than we’ve seen so far! In my opinion, this is one of the strongest projects Marvel has put out in Phase Four, and I would highly recommend it!
