The Chosen is a show made to entertain and point the viewer to scripture. It is not a literal interpretation of scripture, should not be viewed as the Bible, and does not claim to be Biblically accurate in it’s portrayal of new testament events. It’s an entertaining show, but not a replacement for reading and working to interpret the Bible.
This is an ancient Middle Eastern story being told through a more modern Western perspective. (Even though they do make great efforts to ensure the aesthetic of historical accuracy). For more on this, check out the book ‘Jesus Through Middle Eastern Eyes‘. As the series has evolved and gained more financial backing, it has become more about what could have been and an entertaining story. We enjoy it, but that does not mean it is for everyone, or that it is accurate. We still think it is a great study resource. We would argue that you can find a lot of Bible lessons in much less Bible focused shows and movies, this one points you directly to the Bible.

The Chosen Season 5 Discussion Guide and Bible Study
Episode 1
Summary for Episode 1 of The Chosen Season 5
The Chosen season 5 begins with Jesus and the disciples having a conversation about Jesus’ final days on earth (The Last Supper). After a brief conversation, the episode then jumps four days prior and shows people preparing for Palm Sunday and Jesus coming on a donkey. There is a quite a bit of behind the crowd’s conversations between Pharisees and leaders regarding the threat of Jesus and his followers. Near the end of the episode, Jesus begins to feel the weight of what is to come and begins to grieve this (with most likely much more to come).

- Jesus begins to feel his soul stir over his upcoming death. What are ways that you have experienced this feeling in your life? How is it similar or different than what Jesus is experiencing here?

Episode 2
Summary for Episode 2 of The Chosen Season 5
Episode 2 picks up the continuation of the last supper, which will likely be a recurring theme of each episode. This session discusses the confusion of the apostles on why Jesus has to leave. Then again, we jump back in time to fill out some more back story of Kafni, Ramah, and Thomas. Later in the episode, Thomas is confronted by Kafni which causes him to break down in grief. Much of the episode goes between the tax collectors, Caiaphas, and the apostles. The climax of the episode is Jesus turning over the temple in anger and ends with Judas silently saying, “What have you done?”

Themes for Discussion: Dealing with grief and guilt, Righteous Anger,
- Jesus begins to get pushback of the apostles not understanding why He has to go. Do you think you would have struggled to understand or would have accepted it quickly? What makes you think this?
- Peter struggled to give a sermon in the way that Jesus did. Later (in the Bible), we see Peter as a great speaker and leader. What lessons can you take from this in your own life?
- Thomas is quickly attacked by grief after his interaction with Kafni and Naomi. Have you experienced this kind of sudden, deep grief. How have you handled it in your life? (This can be a heavy question depending on the life experience of your group, so tread gently and lightly).
- Jesus clearing out the temple is an often misunderstood piece of scripture. What led Jesus to clear out the temple? How is that similar and dissimilar to how modern day Christians use this scripture?
