Quick Glass Onion Summary

Glass Onion is the follow up to the 2019 hit Knives Out. Great detective Benoit Blanc is mysteriously invited to a murder mystery party on a private island hosted by tech billionaire Miles Bron. When things start going wrong, Blanc knows that something is afoot. To solve the mystery, he must discover the secrets all of Miles and his eclectic friends are hiding, no matter what risks Blanc must take.

Is Glass Onion Appropriate for Younger Kids?

No, this movie has scenes intended for an older audience. There is an implied sex scene, a fair amount of swearing (including one F-bomb), scandalous swimwear attire, and of course, murder. This may be a fun watch with the teens in your life, but it’s definitely better to keep the littles away from this one. If you want to find some age-appropriate mysteries, you can check out our 3 Mysteries for Any Age post.

-Characters & Acting-

The acting was fantastic, I hated most of the characters in the best way possible. The only character to come back from the first movie was Benoit Blanc played by Daniel Craig. I like him a lot more in the movie, largely because he has a lot more character development. The murder suspects were incredibly dislikeable in a loveable way.

The cast includes stars like Kathryn Hahn (one of my personal favorite actresses), Edward Norton, Janelle Monae, Leslie Odom Jr., Kate Hudson, Dave Bautista, Jessica Henwick, and Madelyn Cline, plus tons of cameos from celebrities like Ethan Hawke, Stephen Sondheim, Natasha Lyonne, Angela Lansbury, and many more. It is also worth noting that this is both Stephen Sondheim and Angela Lansbury’s final posthumous roles.

-Script & Story-

I won’t spoil the mystery, but it is very good. Rian Johnson revitalized the mystery genre with the first Knives Out and he continues his masterful use of mystery in Glass Onion. I personally don’t think this mystery is quite as good as the first one, but it’s close. I appreciate Johnson’s social commentary; I think it’s a good balance of thought provoking without being heavy handed.

-Film Quality-

One of the things I loved from the first Knives Out was the commitment to the setting of New England. It was present from the clothes, food, style, etc., and that commitment is present in Glass Onion. Whereas the first movie has a fall vibe, this one feels very summery. Of course, the setting of a private island lends itself to summer easily, the costumes, food, and overall vibe makes this the perfect summer movie. I very much so hope that they will continue to theme these movies around seasons. Overall, the quality of this movie matches the first one. It has great cinematography, soundtrack, setting, costumes and makeup, everything you would expect from a sequel to Knives Out.

Favorite Glass Onion Moments-

One of my favorite things about this sequel is the inclusion of an actor who appears in the first Knives Out as Trooper Wagner, a Benoit Blanc fanboy. Noah Segan, who played Trooper Wagner, returns in the second, but instead as a totally different character, Derol who is a beach bum. I really hope that they continue this trend of including Noah Segan if they continue this series!

Glass Onion Discussion Questions

**Spoilers in discussion questions!**

1) Miles would do anything to keep his power over his friends. How can we identify people trying to manipulate us?

2) Benoit Blanc and Helen tell a lot of lies to keep their real purpose on the island a secret. Is it morally wrong to lie if it is for a good reason? What makes their lies different than the lies that Miles’ friends told about Andi in court?

3) All of Miles’ friends have done bad things to keep their friendship with him. How does knowing that information make you view real life celebrities, influencers, politicians, and scientists?

4) Helen asks for Blanc’s help because she wants justice for her sister. If you were in her shoes, what would you have done?

5) Helen was allowed to show her rage at the end of the movie. Many black women are not allowed to be upset for fear of the stereotype that people will put on them of the angry black woman. Do you feel that you have perpetuated this stereotype in your life? Why or why not?
